Memories - My Childhood in Shirdi
Every time I visit Shirdi, my childhood comes back to tease me!
Every wonderful moment of my childhood spent in Shirdi was beautiful. I thank god for giving me the chance to be born in the 90's, at least before the millennium, Because I enjoyed some amazing, peaceful moments in Shirdi, which cannot be compared to the present day situation!
I remember staying there for 8-10 days, I remember the time when there used to be no crowd in the temple. No one pulled you even if you stood there chanting a shloka, No one touched you if you simply smiled at saibaba's beautiful idol. No one dared to raise their voice in the temple and No one pushed you! The temple, with simple decorations, was so peaceful. I remember playing and running around in the sanctum sanatorium of the Samadhi temple, clicking photographs and even getting the time to pose. I could touch the Samadhi and stand there for 5-10 mins, looking into Saibaba's eyes. There was so much i could do! But today, the only thing I can do is look at the idol and pray, everything else is lost somewhere in the crowd!
The shanti and bhakti hall, made for the convenience of the bhaktas who stand in the Darshan queue, was made in 1998! I remember going there when it was under construction. When it was ready for use, I used to stand on the steel benches and walk in the queue. As time passed, the crowd started swelling and I remember how even years after that, I used to stand on those benches and shout out loudly, "Sainath maharaj ki," waiting for the bhaktas to reply back with a loud 'Jay'!
But today, all I can do with chant the name of lord, while walking quietly in the super long queue.
In Dwarkamai, I remember how all the priests and other workers used to laugh at all my childish antics! I used to sing the whole aarti (which i even do now). My parents used to read the sai satcharitra there, while I was busy lighting up the earthen lamps every Thursday near the fireplace, where baba used to cook his food. Whenever I went to the Dwarkamai, I distributed the holy teerth (water) to everyone and stood there for almost 1-2 hrs. I remember how I fought with a groom who entered the temple with his footwear on. I remember how I used to sweep the temple at night. I remember how I used to offer naivedya (offering of food) to Saibaba at noon. Post noon aarti, all the bhaktas used to mix the food items brought by all the everyone and then, distribute it everywhere. On my birthday, I used to offer some pieces of the cake inside the Dhuni. like an offering made to Agni dev (fire god). But today, the sanctum sanatorium of Dwarkamai is closed on most Weekends and Thursday, teerth & naivedya distribution is stopped by the sansthan (management). The only thing I can do now is take the darshana and be content. The dhuni is permanently closed from all the sides.
The Sansthan premises was like a big playground for me, as I posed, hopped, jumped, danced and sung aartis in loud and clear tones! The sai satyavrat puja was perfect where the priest never ran out of time and recited the full story of Lord satyanarayan properly. During the kakad aarti (morning aarti), everyone inside the sanctum sanatorium was asked to sit down till the priests finished the holy bath of Shri Saibaba. But today, everything has become a part of the fast-paced life. They have cut down on time and made space for more better arrangements. Fair enough! But what about those people who stand up in the middle of an aarti, causing inconvenience to people. They start gossiping when the priest is reciting shlokas. They throw coins and flowers at the Main idol, which may cause permanent damage. Can't people think twice before acting like this?
Shirdi is, was and will always be close to my heart. I will continue to celebrate my birthday there and I will always love everything about my holy watan. But, there were some wonderful days I enjoyed during my childhood in the late 90s. Those days will never come back. The current generation of children who visit Shirdi don't get the privilege of all things nice, the way I got it. They don't get to do everything that i did. So in a way, I was truly lucky. Thank you so much for everything, God.

MAMI (Mumbai Film Festival 2011)
MAMI Mumbai film festival 2011 ended on October 20th with the screening of the films, Dolphin Tale and Pina. I consider myself lucky, as I got the opportunity to watch 14 brilliantly crafted films this year, thanks to the fact that Cinemax Sion was one of the venues. It was an amazing experience and honestly, being a Film and Literature student, there was a lot to learn from each of these films. Some films had scripts which were beyond imagination, some had simple stories and some were just visually stunning. Also, the editing techniques, visual effects and use of light in some of these films was just superb.
I decided to watch films made in different languages rather than just sticking to English. Also, I did not blindly believe what the critics had said about a certain film. If the subject was interesting, I was just went for it. Out of all the films I've seen, I would like to recommend some that should definitely make their way on your must watch list!
1.Generation P (Russian) - Based on the novel by Russian author Victor Pelevin. The film focuses on the rise of the advertising industry in Post-Soviet Russia.
2. My Little Princess (French) - One of my favorites! Directed by Eva Lonesco, this film is about the love-hate relationship between an eccentric mother Hannah and her sweet 10yr old daughter Violetta. The mother who is a photographer, asks her daughter to pose in frilly period grab just for fun. As days go by, from being a normal school girl, Violetta suddenly becomes the class pariah and is forced to pose nude by her own mother. My Little Princess won the Best film award at MAMI this year.
3. Lovely Man (Indonesian) - Cahaya, a girl with strong Islamic values, discovers that her father is a transvestite working on the streets. The story unfolds in one night which they spent together. A sensitive subject that was handled with great maturity.
4. La conquete (French) - The film shows France and it's run up to the presidential elections. This film is the journey of Nicolas Sarkozy, the man who gained power, but at the cost of losing his wife.
5. Pina - Pure poetry in motion! That's the only way I can describe this beautiful movie. This feature length dance film portrays the inimitable art of the German choreographer Pina Bausch, who died in Summer 2009. The film was in 3D and is aesthetically shot. The choreography was well, simply stunning!
6.Sunny - (South Korean) A MUST WATCH! It will definitely strengthen your special bond with the besties. Some moments in the film made me cry, while some made me think, "Wow, I might think the same way 10-15 years later." The film is about a group of friends, who form a group in school called Sunny. All the girls come from different walks of life. They get separated, only to meet each other years later.
7.Urumi - (Malayalam) A Period drama starring Prithvi and Genelia D'souza, which is a real story about a boy named Kelu and Vasco Da Gama. The cinematography of this movie is breathtaking and so are the visual effects.
8. 17 Filles (French) - 17 girls decide to pregnant for fun and they don't know what's coming their way.
MAMI 2011 has pushed me to think beyond Indian, Regional and International cinema. I was shocked to see Molaghat, a beautiful film helmed by 3 directors (They have analysed the meaning of death in their own way through 3 short stories) from Iran. Such film fests are a boon to people like me who love World cinema!
So try and watch these fabulous films whenever you can and I am sure you will love it as much as I did. The MAMI team is doing a fantastic job by bringing together some wonderful world movies all under one roof. Can't wait for the 14th edition of this wonderful film festival now.
Pretty Little Goodies
Honestly, I am bored of studying! I really don't understand why do we need to study so much. I feel like reading practically everything except my syllabus reference books. My bookshelf is filled with all kinds of books (Reference books for exams, fiction/ non-fiction novels, biographies etc) and some books have been calling out to me everyday,"In which century will my turn come"? But right now, I am surrounded by all the reference books, xerox copies of notes and everything else I need to study properly.
Sometimes I think, how I wish a place like Hogwarts existed (Yes! I love Harry Potter).
Coming back to the post, this one is totally random.

Of Birthdays, Celebrations and some Shopping!
I've always been a big fan of Birthdays and Celebrations since childhood. I start getting excited about my birthday a month in advance. My parents think that the excitement might die down with every passing year, but it just doesn't. The university exams played spoilsport this year as I had an important exam, just a day after my birthday. Nevertheless, I don't really believe in giving up and hence, I went ahead with my birthday plans. As usual, I celebrated my birthday in Shirdi with my family. It was fun, but I had to come back home the same day (reached Mumbai post midnight) and study all night before entering the exam hall to write my paper.
| I am not a big fan of Huge cakes in different shapes. A simple chocolate cake is perfect! |
Once again, my dad decided to gift me a wrist watch. This time, he opted for a Swatch with metal straps and blue dial. Its beautiful, exactly what I wanted. I've been eyeing a couple of Swatch watches for a really long time. It looks classic. Just that I couldn't wear it on my birthday as the strap had to be altered. The picture is not that clear, but its a beautiful watch.
I managed to shop for some make up items that are missing from my vanity kit. I had to discard all my old eye shadows and some of my old lipsticks as well. So I decided to say HELLO to a new eyeshadow palette from NYX (Caribbean collection). The palette has 5 wonderful bright, pop colours which are perfect for this season. Moreover, I wanted these colours since a really long time. I find this palette extremely cute because of the colours.
Also, I picked up a lipstick from Revlon called 'Cherries in the snow'. Its a beautiful hue of Pink and Red. While experimenting, I decided to blend this lipstick with the NYX soft matte lip creme in Milan. The result was a creamy pinkish red hue on my lips which ended up looking wonderful. (I don't have a picture of me with that lipstick on, but I will click one the next time I wear it). Blending two lipsticks is always fun!
Exams haven't been treating me all that well! Honestly, I don't really like the concept of exams and the pressure and stress that goes with it. But then, its a part and parcel of life and you have to deal with it. Can't wait for these exams to end so that I can start dancing to my heart's content, get back to my usual fare of workouts and BLOG BLOG BLOG!!!
PS: I got myself a pretty statement collar necklace. An outfit post with that necklace will be up soon!
Did you buy anything interesting this fortnight? Feel free to share it here or on the Facebook page.

Birthday Haircut | B:Blunt
I've always had this habit of getting a new haircut or if nothing, some styling, a few days before my birthday. And so once again, I stepped into B:blunt to get a haircut. My stylist has been the same for the past couple of years and each time I've had a haircut, he has never failed to give me a new look. A happy hair experience is always good for you. The pictures are not clear as they have been taken from my sister's phone, but I feel they look good anyway.
A short crop (like a bob) is something I wouldn't really go for, as I don't think it will suit my face cut. But the weather in Mumbai takes a toll on me every year and I cant help but for a shoulder length or for something slightly shorter than that (Honestly, I don't have the heart to go for any style shorter than that). I don't go to the salon with any style in my mind. I trust my stylist, Rohan from B:Blunt, enough to give me something that will look good on me (He does a wonderful job each time). So once again, a new summer hairstyle and a new look to flaunt is finally here!
PS: I love the decor at B:blunt! So chic and stylish.

MAC-a-FIED
When MAC opened their first store in India, I was excited. But being a regular college going girl, their products are slightly expensive and burns a big hole in the pocket. Plus, I don't like asking dad to buy me expensive make up items. But this year, post a couple of VO projects, I managed to save up a decent amount, enough to buy some MAC make up items that I've been eyeing for some time. Plus, with just less than a week for my birthday, I thought its high time I gift those items to myself (More like a self-gift therapy). I wanted them anyway right? So here goes, I got MAC-a-FIED!
Little things in my Vanity Kit
We all have our favourites. Be it books, music albums, movies, clothes or make up. There are things that we cant live without (which in my case is a Lip balm) and then there are things which continue to tempt us till we don't go out and buy them (which in my case at the moment is a lipstick by MAC). Whenever I go out to buy make up products, there are a few things I keep in mind before buying them -
- The mfg and expiry date
- The quality of the product
- The price (as I buy things according to a fixed budget in order to control my splurge limit)
- How well it gels with my skin tone (if they product in question is a foundation, lipstick, eye shadow etc)
Once I'm sure of all the above mentioned things, I buy the product. Over the past couple of months, I've had a new list of favourite goodies in my Vanity kit (and a new Make up kit as well). Here's a sneak peek into my Vanity box.

Sai as Sagun Bhramin
There are two aspects of God or Brahman : (1) the Unmanifested (Nirgun) and (2) the Manifested (Sagun). The Nirgun is formless, while the Sagun is with form, though both denote the same Brahman. Some prefer to worship the former, some the latter. As stated in the Gita (chapter XII) the worship of the latter is easy and preferable. As man has got a form (body, senses, etc.), it is natural and easy for him to worship the God with form. Our love and devotion do not develop unless we worship Sagun Brahman for a certain period of time, and as we advance; it leads us to the worship (meditation) of Nirgun Brahman. So let us start with Sagun worship. Image, altar, fire, light, sun, water, Brahman are the seven objects of worship, but Sadguru is better than all these. Let us, on this occasion, bring to our mind the form of Sai, Who was non-attachment Incarnate, and Who was a resting-place for His whole-hearted devotees. Our faith in His words is the seat of Asan; and our Sankalpa (determination to start and finish the Puja) is the abandonment of all our desires. Some say that Sai was a Bhagwad-bhakta (devotee of the Lord), others say He was a Maha-Bhagwat (a great devotee), but to us He is God Incarnate. He was extremely forgiving, never irritable, straight, soft, tolerant and content beyond comparison.
Though He looked embodied (as having the form), He was really dis-embodied, emotionless, unattached and internally free. The Ganges on its way to the sea, cools and refreshes the creatures affected with heat, gives life to the crops and trees, and quenches the thirst of many. Similarly Saints (Souls) like Sai, while they live their own life, give solace and comfort to all. Lord Krishna has said that 'the Saint is My soul, My living image, I am He or He is My pure form (Being).' This in-describable Shakti or Power of God, known as Pure Existence, Knowledge and Bliss, incarnated in the form of Sai in Shirdi. The Shruti (Taitiriya Upanishad) describes Brahman as Bliss. This we read or hear daily in the books, but the devout people experienced this Brahman or Bliss in Shirdi. Baba, the support of all, required no prop or support (Asan) from anybody. He always used a piece of sack-cloth for His seat, which was covered with a small beautiful bed by His bhaktas and has a bolster placed by them, as a rest to His back. Baba respected the feelings of His devotees and allowed them to worship Him as they liked. Some waved Chamara or fans before Him, some played on musical instruments, some washed His hands and Feet, some others applied scent and chandan, some gave betel nut with leaves and other things, and some others offered naivedya. Though He looked like living in Shirdi, He was present everywhere. This all-pervasiveness of His way daily experienced by His devotees.
Our humble prostration to this all-pervasive Sadguru.

A Colourful Summer - Its all about GREEN!
Summer in Mumbai means bringing back all those amazing pairs of shorts, cute dresses and bright coloured accessories. The weather here is hot and humid. Although I prefer stepping out in tees, tops and the likes, I decided to wear a cardigan over my Tee just for fun. Its extremely comfortable and is perfect for all the seasons.
I love Green, it's my favourite colour after Pink and Orange (at least, that's what I love currently). So I got my favourite pair of green shorts out along with the Green stone necklace, which I think goes well with the overall look. Its that time of the year when there are colours endless all around you, So, get going with it.

Summer Skincare Guide | Beat the Heat
Summer is back! Its time to sport your favorite dresses, colorful shorts and more. But it is also the season where our skin faces the maximum issues, thanks to the harsh sun rays and excessive humidity (or dry heat in some regions). Taking care of your skin is extremely important. Seasonal changes take a toll on your skin and it is necessary that you take care of your face and body, especially during Summer, when keeping your skin hydrated is essential. Hydrating face masks are your best bet this season. It helps in replenishing the skin's moisture level. I love making natural face masks at home rather than opting for a chemically treated one. Natural ingredients work best during this season, especially home made fruit or herbal masks. Due to the heat and dust all around, your skin tends to suffer from rashes, boils and worst, tanning.
Here are a few tips you can follow along with a mini recipe of a Summer pack which refreshes and cools your skin.
![]() |
| Source: myhealthmirror |
- Use a good sunscreen, but please remember, that you must re-apply the moisturizer or lotion in every 5-6 hours, depending on the number of hours spent under the sun. Invest in a good SPF moisturizer/lotion that suits your skin type. Also, look out for a good lip balm with SPF. Why should your lips alone suffer?
- If you sweat a lot, rub an ice cube on your face before applying the moisturizer. It helps keep your skin cool. I do that often (except when I have a cold). You can also opt for a face spritzer, fill it with ice cold water/rose water and carry it in your bag. Spray it before applying your moisturizer and re-spray whenever required.
- Umbrellas, Hats, Shades; they are all a must have in your handbag.
- Eat healthy food items. Avoid junk food (especially fried, spicy and sour items). What you eat shows on your face. Include green leafy veggies, fruits and don't forget to drink lots of water. It helps in flushing out your toxins.
- Exercise and Be happy! A smile can keep all those blues away :)
DIY Summer Mask
Ingredients
1/2 cup Oatmeal
1/4 cup Watermelon
1/4 cup Cucumber
Procedure - Add grated watermelon and cucumber to the oatmeal and mix all the ingredients. Apply the thick paste on your face and keep it for 10 minutes. Rinse off with water after that. This works as a wonderful coolant.
Note: Results may vary based on skin type. Ensure you get a patch test done before trying the mask.

Glam It Up with Accessories
Accessories can make any dull piece of apparel look good. One must always pick up accessories that they like instead of looking for an exact copy of a friend's necklace or earrings. So after a long day, attending one lecture after another at college, I decided to hunt for some accessories. After all, a little bit of 'Accessory Splurging' doesn't hurt anyone, except my pocket! Got a few good stuff that will spruce up any plain Tee or A pastel or neon dress. Take a look! :)
| Butterfly pendant with Chain |
This piece is perfect for a light day out with friends or a day at the theatre. It looks great with Plain tees and skirts and Colourful jumpsuits.
| Finger ring 1: Chunky finger ring with diamante Finger ring 2: Finger ring with blue stones |
Chunky rings brighten up my ensemble. I love wearing colourful, chunky finger rings! The first one caught my eye because of its unique design. It goes well with Indian apparel as well. As for the second one, those blue stones were enough to make me pay up for it. Plus, a finger ring in this shade of blue looks royal. These rings were definitely one of my favourite buys that day.
Oh wait! Did I introduce my latest favourite hair accessory to you?
I must thank my mom as she was the one who managed to find this for me. I was so engrossed in picking up finger rings and other things that my eyes missed out on this little beauty. Again, I love this colour. This little magical piece is the perfect thing you need to put an icing on your overall look. I loved it so much that I asked the manager of the shop to keep me informed when the stock comes in. I so don't wanna miss out on this piece in Orange or Lime green.
I wore this piece today, but the picture isnt that clear!
So now I have quite a few good accessories for my upcoming trips & of course, My Birthday.
And as they say, a day out shopping for accessories always ends up giving you a big smile! :)

Summer is here and so are dresses in light, summery colours. I decided to dress up in one of my favourite ensemble - A light yellow dress with Beige peep toes! Perfect for a girls day out or a lunch with friends. I wore this to college for a special photo shoot. PS: I always wear my favourite Bumble bee glasses from Valentino with this.
Music Review - Mausam
Mausam did not fare well at the BO, but I really liked the music of this film. Directed by one of the finest talents of our country, Pankaj Kapur Uncle made his debut as the director of this film.
Many believe that a films music is one of the key elements that can help making it a hit. Mausam is right there. The music of the film is composed by Pritam & The lyrics are written by Irshad Kamil. For many, The JWM combo is a winner.
The album opens with a heart warming, sweet acoustic guitar tune. Rabba is a delight for every die-hard romantic. Shahid Mallya is a singer to watch out for. His voice suits Shahid kapoor's lovesick expressions. The song is dreamy and takes you on a dream world ride. There is a reprise version sung by Rahat fateh Ali khan which is equally good. But personally, I like Shahid Mallya's version.
