Self Care in the time of Self Quarantine | Covid-19 Awareness
Mental and Physical health is an important part of overall wellness. For many, especially those who aren’t well acquainted with the process of working from home, the last few days haven’t been easy. It tends to get overwhelming for many, especially those who are used to the process of regular social interactions.
With an overload of information related to #Covid19 being shared everywhere, we often ignore the importance of small joys. In times like these, there is a need to focus on the importance of Self Care and filling our life with some positivity. So, while we #SelfQuarantine, how about we try and do the following:
Learn something new
Take up an online course, experiment with a new dish in the kitchen, learn that dance form by watching online tutorials, play with paints or just learn a new language. With digital courses and tutorials available across platforms, learning doesn't have to be confined to four walls and a blackboard alone.
Make time for our hobbies
Stocked up on new books in the past few months, but never got the chance to read? Or, is the guitar in your room pushed to a faraway corner, where dust often greets it more than you do? This can be the perfect time to live your passion and discover the small joys attached to it. We all have a hobby (or more) we love, which perhaps, had to be pushed in the back-burner due to various reasons, including the everyday work routine.
Practice home workouts
Sulking because the gyms are closed, and there isn't anything that can be done? Well, if you have the motivation to stay fit, even while at home, then nothing can stop you. There are so many Apps (like Nike Training Club, Sweat) & even routines being shared by fitness experts (I personally love the routines shared by Cassey Ho of Blogilates). All you need is a workout mat, a bottle of water, and some energy to get going.
Be mindful to support your immune system
Eat healthy, practice breathing exercises, maintain hygiene, take a hot water bucket bath or start your day with a glass full of warm water with lemon; there are many ways in which you can ensure your immune system stays strong. Avoid binging on junk, while binge watching your favourite series, and do not touch your face to pop that pimple. Ensure you wash your hands from time to time!
Take healthy breaks from news
Constant sharing of updates & news tends to take a negative toll. Being indoors and change in routine is enough. You definitely don't want negativity to affect your mental health. Look at the positive side of life a little more often, and restrict the time spent on reading updates. Perhaps, you can reserve 30 mins - 60 mins, anytime during the day, solely for reading newspapers and catching up on all the world news.
Encourage quick breaks in between work
I won't deny - I am guilty of spending hours behind the laptop, working round the clock, even to the extent of forgetting my lunch. However, with more hours being spent indoors and absolutely no travel whatsoever, it's important that you take short breaks to refresh. Take a walk around the house, drink some water, stretch yourself, step out in the balcony to soak in some sunshine or just take a power nap (if you can master it - well done. Because I simply cannot).
Hydrate yourself from time to time
Well, this is a no-brainer. You need to stay hydrated, and ensure you get enough daily intake of water. You can also include fresh fruit juices, buttermilk and other items.
It's time to re-connect
How about calling your old friends and reliving some precious memories? Or, a video call to tell your bae how much you love him / her? Perhaps, play a virtual game with friends or just challenge each other to watch the same film. Or, just enjoy some good ol' conversations with the family. This could be a good time to relax, unwind and create a stronger bond with those who matter.
Be Kind!
Spread positivity & be kind to those around you. Encourage paid leaves for your domestic help, discuss the matter with your society secretaries to extend paid leaves to the sweeper, cleaner or other daily workers, who extend their services to you everyday. Generously tip those who deliver food and other items to your doorstep. Extend your gratitude to all those who have been endlessly working throughout the time of crisis - including emergency service staff, medical staff, army, government officials among others. It's time we give back to the society, be responsible, kind, and stay united. Remember - gratitude attracts positive vibes!
Spend time with your Pets
This is an amazing time to play, be goofy and crazy with your pets. Spending adequate time with your pets can be the most amazing feeling ever, as their love is pure and unmatchable. And no, they cannot carry the Covid-19 virus. Please educate yourself before abandoning pets, and be aware that as per WHO - animals cannot be infected with this viral disease.
Let’s be responsible and respect regulations for a better tomorrow. All this, while ensuring that we look after ourselves and encourage Self Care! Stay safe, everyone.

Covid-19 continues to spread across various countries, bringing many cities to a standstill and forcing us to change our everyday work routine. Several precautions being taken by health ministries and governments of different countries, states - ranging from shutting down cinema halls, to gyms, swimming pools and even educational institutions. While updates roll out, it is important to note - Social media is packed with tons of information. Well, that's a fact. Tips to reduce Period Pain | Let's Talk about Periods
As women, we go through the monthly grind of tracking our period dates, experiencing mood swings during the time of PMS and what follows is obviously the real deal - your monthly cycle of periods. Every human body is different, so what your mother or sibling experiences during her monthly cycle may not be the same for you and vice versa. While pre and during menstrual cycle symptoms differ from person to person - including acne, bloating, tender breasts, massive change in mood (ranging from anger, irritation, feeling lethargic to emotional) and some even tend to fall severely sick with cold, fever. However, period cramps and pain is something that we all experience.
While the nature of pain, it's level and pain points may be different, what's constant is the discomfort experienced during the cycle. It does get difficult to focus on work and other commitments, especially during the first 2-3 days, when the heavy flow coupled with pain pushes an individual to the edge. While some people prefer popping an OTC medicine, many of us don't like to take any pills. Several women experience excruciating pain, while some simply have muscular pains / cramps on the first day. Period pain differs from person to person, depending upon personal health and lifestyle. There's a lot to it than what meets the eye, so if anyone suffers from any form of pain that is impossible to handle, one must visit their doctor / gynaecologist and get this discussed.
I've always used this platform to share my own experiences. So, why not this? Starting today, our new series - "Let's Talk about Periods' will feature posts that focus on personal thoughts, remedies, and anecdotes related to a topic that is something that we all - as women - experience. The idea stemmed from an incident, where I realised how even in 2019, people go red or shut their ears when someone speaks about pads, sanitary hygiene and periods on a public platform. In a country that still considers 'menstruation' as a taboo and something which shouldn't be spoken about on a larger platform. We need more discussions on something as basic as a period cycle, and share our thoughts, which can help other women, especially young girls, with the required knowledge.
Let's kick off the first post, where I discuss personally tried and tested tips, which help me ease the discomfort during a period cycle
Drink ample of Water
Many of you may find this to be a cliched. But, we don't realise the importance of water and it's miracles enough. Lack of water tends to make the body feel more sluggish and can lead to mental stress. Drinking enough water (at least 2-3 litres), especially during your cycle, will not only keep you hydrated, but also ensure that the toxins are flushed out and eases out bloating. I always carry a bottle of water with me, wherever I go. It helps during long hours spent in traffic, and drinking water in regular intervals also ensures that the body functions perfectly.
Exercise - be it in any form!
A lot of us feel it's too much of an effort to drag ourselves and work out, especially when in pain. But, I've realised that nothing can help me distract from those cramps, quite like exercising does. Over time, I've seen the effect it has on the pain, as the endorphins released from the body does an excellent job at pain management. Plus, it supports proper flow of blood in the body, makes you feel happier from within, and throws out all the stress, tightness, making your body feel more flexible and light. Of course, you may want to give certain forms a miss if it gets too uncomfortable, but I personally love dancing, light running, yoga free hand exercises, and aerobics.
Take a hot water shower or bath
I am more of a bucket bath person, as I don't like wasting water. However, I love opting for hot water baths during the period cycle. Sometimes, I even add essential oils or use a refreshing shower gel to pamper myself. Such little efforts contribute to easing those cramps, and also helps release any form of stress, sluggishness or pain. Application of heat is known to benefit cramps quite well. One can even opt for a hot water bag, if the pain is intense.
Love me some Chamomile & Ginger Tea
During the monthly cycle, I usually prefer to have my regular cup of tea with ginger (and even on other days - as I cannot have plain tea). While I have ginger or masala tea in the morning, evenings are reserved for Chamomile tea. The anti-inflammatory properties in this tea helps ease cramps to a large extent. After a long tiring day at work, a hot cup of chamomile tea takes away all the stress, calms the mind and helps ensure I sleep well. This is has been one of my personal favourite picks, and I highly recommend that you try Chamomile tea as well.
Keep an eye on your Diet
This is crucial! During the period cycle, one tends to feel more inclined towards eating a lot of fried, cheesy or junk fast food items. Plus, midnight cravings push you to explore the dessert section, and hog on chocolates, pastries a little more often. I have a massive sweet tooth, and do have the cravings for sweets during my period cycle. However, I try to limit my chocolate intake, and usually opt for dark chocolate. Also, eating fresh fruits and / or green leafy veggies is a major plus. Your body needs food items that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, iron, zinc and calcium. I don't drink or smoke (and I've firmly stood by that ethic), but for those who do, it is recommended that you avoid indulging in these habits during the menstrual cycle.
Take time out for yourself
Light some aromatherapy candles, listen to good music, watch your favourite show or just gentle massage some of the pain points with a gentle, fragrant massage oil. Take a long walk or read a book. It is important that you take some time out for yourself and indulge in things that you love or like. It can just be spending a few minutes talking calmly with your loved ones. I always ensure that I prioritise myself and my health during the period cycle. Everybody deserves some 'me' time, and you taking time out and switching off for sometime is a must!
I hope some of these personally tried and tested tips help you during the next period cycle. These are small ways in which some part of the discomfort can be eased. Of course, you will always have OTC medicines, balms, stick on pain bandages and heat bags as an aid. But, these little things are important to ensure that your body feels light, fresh and stress-free. Periods should not hold you back from doing what you love! Let it become a part of your routine, and live each day with great positivity.

Here’s why we think Sleeping Ugly is cool! | Sofy Bodyfit Overnight
As a little kid, we have all been fed a healthy diet of picture perfect fairytales. The main protagonist would be an epitome of perfection. She would eat, work, dress up and even sleep so perfectly, that it would put most other girls in her kingdom to shame. But as we grew up, we realised that life is not a chapter out of our favourite fairytale. Life is a real struggle and being perfect all the time is close to impossible. No one is born perfect, so why should you live under the pressure of being perfect all the time? Even while sleeping, eh?
It gets crazy during periods. You maybe a stomach sleeper or someone who likes dozing off in the ‘marathon’ position. But, during those five days, everybody gets into the commando mode - Savdhaan! Well, ask yourself - Do you really want to disturb your sleeping pattern and position every month this way? Is it really worth it, in order to be all perfect and avoid staining sheets, to not enjoy a peaceful sleep? Let me break the bubble for you. Sleeping Ugly is cool and totally okay. By choosing the correct night pad, you can stretch, twist, turn and enjoy a good night’s sleep. Sleeping with your regular Day sanitary pad is not a really good idea (there is a reason it is referred to as a Day pad, right?) Night pads come with a wider back, which keeps you feeling fresh and comfortable and enjoy a good sleep. It helps, since no one likes a pad that keeps shifting here, there and everywhere, leading to leaks and a lot of inconvenience (plus, no sleep). We were recently introduced to the all new Sofy Bodyfit Overnight, and were challenged to swap our regular sanitary pad with the new launch, which is known to be one of India’s longest night pads. Challenges excite us, and reviewing new launches is part of our job. But, does the product live up to all that it promises? We got our team member - Neha, to try out the product. She shared her thoughts with us after her last period, and here’s a round up:
What? - Sofy Bodyfit Overnight (Sanitary Pad)
Price: Rs 79 (Pack of 5)
Available in: 350mm / XXL (Packs of 5 and 10) and 420mm / XXXL (Pack of 3)
What does it promise? - The napkin is specially designed for leakage protection at night. It is the longest pad available in India, thanks to the wider hip guard, that covers your panty from back and gives maximum coverage, thus preventing stains/leakage.
Packaging: Inside the main packet, each pad comes in a disposable cover, which makes it super easy to carry while traveling as well.
Our Experience: We tried the XXL pack (350mm) and were quite impressed with the wide hip-guard. It covers the panty well, especially from the back. This helps, especially those who twist and turn a lot during their sleep (our team member who tried the product is one of them) or those who doze off in any of these positions - starfish, sleep-fighter, crash-lander among others. These pads have a mild fragrance, which helps keeps the period odour away. The pad was thin, not too bulky. One thing that gives this product an edge above it’s competitors is the fact that the super adhesive (on both wings and side wings) ensure that the pad fits perfectly. Thanks to the super comfy dry cover, the pad did not cause any irritation or discomfort,. The product, armed with a double absorbent coat, does it’s job well (even on Day 2, when things literally lead to a blood bath), ensuring there is no leakage.
Verdict: The Sofy Bodyfit Overnight pad lives up to all the promises very well, at an affordable price. While major points are subject to an individual’s flow (that’s the case with every pad in the market), we think you should give this one a try, especially if you are bored of trying itchy sanitary pads with a plastic layer.

Spa La Vie by L'OCCITANE | Mumbai Spa Review
It's been quite a hectic first half of 2016. What with back to back projects, traveling across the city everyday for one commitment after another and more. Apart from my short travel break in May, I haven't really got much time to unwind. So, when the super sweet folks at Spa La Vie by L'OCCITANE invited me for an experiential at their sprawling 8000 sqft wellness sanctuary, I couldn't say no. Spa La Vie is an extension of the popular French brand L'occitane. Founded in 1976, L'OCCITANE is well known for it's aromatic products, that are inspired by Provençal beauty secrets. Despite being situated right in the middle of all the hustle and bustle at Delisle Road (South Mumbai), the moment you enter the spa, you are transported to a world of serenity and peace. So, does the Spa La Vie meet all our expectations? Read on to know our experience.
I reached the venue on time (as per our scheduled appointment) and we were welcomed by the supportive and extremely warm front desk staff. After a quick chat, one of the staff members asked me to fill a form, which required details of my daily lifestyle, area of pain (if any), the kind of massage I am looking for among others. While I continued to fill up the form, I was introduced to my therapist, who then got me a welcome drink - a delicious, strong concoction of honey, mint, ginger and lemon (honestly, it was perfect for the cold that I was then suffering from). After going through all the information, I was asked to take a pick from the Revitalising or Relaxing Aromachologie Massage. The main difference between the two were the oil blends and technique. I opted for the former, as the technique and oil combination sounded like just what my body needs. I switched from my ankle strap heels and wore the pair of Oshos that the therapist got for me, as began walking towards the experiential rooms.

Spa La Vie has multiple rooms dedicated to various treatments, ranging from the Individual Spa Room, VIP Couple Massage Rooms, Facial room and a Hammam room specially dedicated to exclusive wet treatments that are unique to this spa. The Spa room for an individual includes a bath tub (can be an add-on) and shower cubicle with L'Occitane products. It also has a hair dryer, a two-door wardrobe to keep your belongings (with a special box for your valuables) and a small section of the room is reserved for the welcome treatment. After getting a glimpse of all the rooms, the therapist and I proceeded towards the Spa room reserved for me. As soon as you enter the experiential room, the therapist explains the entire treatment in detail, along with introducing the products used for the massage. You are then handed a robe and disposable undergarments for the treatment. Once you've changed, the therapist starts off with a 5 minute welcome treatment, where your legs are nicely cleaned. After that, the therapist kicks off the massage by asking you to take a deep breathe and smell the relaxing oil, which is so good, that it is sure to put you off to sleep. Gentle Swedish effleurages and Balinese movements follow, as we enter a blissful world, free of stress and fatigue for 60 mins, where no mails or phone calls can disturb you.

Time: 60 minutes
Price: Rs 3250/-
Overall Experience: The therapists at Spa La Vie are well trained and very prompt. They take the efforts to understand your lifestyle and ensure that you get the best results from the treatment offered. Plus, what I really liked about my therapist was the fact that she didn't rush through the whole thing or tried to finish explaining the treatment in haste. Every minute detail was taken into consideration and discussed, before starting off the treatment. Since I had a bad cold, the therapist was sweet enough to stop and quickly get me a bottle of water, tissues whenever I sneezed. The techniques used in this treatment were perfect for anyone who has a stiff neck or shoulders, tired legs or hands that have suffered enough with all the typing and tweeting throughout the week. After the amazing massage, I opted to take a bath (since I had a meeting scheduled that evening). Spa La Vie also gets brownie points for stocking up on L'OCCITANE products everywhere. I swear by their shower gels and it was a delight to also sample their hair care products. They also have a counter right next to the foot reflexology area, where you can buy some of their popular products. They have bath, face and hair towels in multiple sizes to suit your needs. All the spa rooms are well maintained. Hygiene is of utmost importance at a spa and the folks at Spa La Vie leave no room for doubt in this department. A quick hot shower later, I dried my hair and changed, only to feel ten times more lighter and calmer than I was earlier in the day. While changing from the Oshos to my heels again, the super sweet therapist got me one more cup of the herbal tea, as a remedy to cure my cold and sore throat. Full marks to Spa La Vie for their courteous, prompt and hard working staff as well as amazing hospitality.
Verdict: ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦
Highly recommended for the variety of treatments, excellent ambience, great hospitality and of course, a blissful overall experience!

Ten ways to Be Happy and Encourage Positivity | Wellness
There are days when you lose all hope and just don't want to give anything a chance. In your mind, you know that a little bit of effort may just do the trick, but instead, you prefer to hang your boots and distance yourself from all kinds of conversations. Then, there are times when you are so confused and puzzled, that all you need is that one ray of hope, that can change your perspective towards life and things around you for good. You may not always find a source of sunshine around you and that is when you need to build a strong and positive state of mind. It's important, because positivity not only reflect on your mental state, but also on your face, health and overall well being. Read on to know more about the ten simple things that you need to do and tell yourself everyday.
1. Don't stop dreaming! Work hard, so much that you are capable enough to strike off one item after another from your bucket list, before you accomplish your final goal. Never give up!
2. Get up, get out of your bed and welcome the sunshine with open arms. Whip up a healthy breakfast, mixed with a few good food items that you like. Listen to your favourite song or enjoy a light conversation with your bestie on the phone (or your family, if you are not alone), because your early morning mood can affect how you feel during the rest of the day.
3. Look out of the window and appreciate the beautiful works of Mother Nature. Hear the birds chirping, look at the lush green trees and the beautiful blue sky. They are all there for you, so remember, you are not alone.
4. Do a quick 5 minute meditation technique to get rid of all your anxieties and troublesome worries. Take a deep breath, stretch your body and in eight counts, slowly relax your body, look down and exhale.
5. Bring out your favourite outfit, pair it up with the perfect accessories and choose the right make-up products. Instead of stressing over it and making it a formal drill, dressing up should keep you excited about which outfit you can show off the next day. A well put together outfit always ensures compliments, which can definitely make your day.
6. Don't forget to wear your most important accessory - A smile! You may not realise its worth, till you notice how your smile can make someone else's day. Try it, and you won't be disappointed. And don't forget, its the most precious accessory, that can make even the most boring days look better.
7. Don't just wait for someone to give you a hug or say how pretty you are looking today. Walk towards the mirror, take a look and hug yourself. "You are special and there is no one like you" - repeat this line and walk ahead confidently. Learn to love yourself too.
8. Do not assume that things will turn out to be disastrous and nothing will work your way. Starting your day on a negative note is the worst thing to do. Always believe in yourself and say - Yes! I will have a great day.
9. A simple To-Do list can really organise things in your life for good. Don't try to pack your list with multiple tasks, which you may not even end up completing (which will make you feel all the more miserable). Jot down a few important tasks & work out your schedule in a way that the tasks can be easily achieved.
10. A tiny treat for your accomplishments, no matter how big or small, is always welcome. Go, buy a small bar of chocolate, pick up a bunch of fresh flowers for your vase or just go watch a film. Remember, you deserve it!
Go ahead, believe in yourself and fill your life with lots of happiness.
Much love,
The Dancebee
