Balgandharva | Film Review
Some movies make you cry, Some make you laugh, Some ask you to leave your brains at home. But, very few movies leave you speechless! Balgandharva did that to me & my dad. I was glued onto my seat, not moving an inch (And mind you, I was damn hungry).
This is Narayanrao Shripad Rajhans' story - one of the greatest singers and stage actors. He was famous for his roles of female characters in Marathi plays, since women were not allowed to act on stage during his time. He got the name “Balgandharva” from the famous freedom fighter Lokmanya Tilak who patted his back & gave him title while praising him for his performance.
The film begins with Balgandharva (Subodh bhave) performing for a “natak”. He is part of the Kirloskar Sangeet Mandali. The company was run by Mujumdar and Nanasaheb Joglekar. After Joglekar’s death in 1911, there was discontent about Mujumdar’s dictatorial and manipulative style. Bal Gandharva, Gangesh Govind (‘Ganpatrao’) Bodas (kishore kadam) and Govindrao Tembe (avinash narkar) left the company in 1913 to form Gandharva Sangeet Mandali. The lavish sets, sarees, perfumes & other expenses leads their company into debt.Narayanrao Bal Gandharva became the sole owner of the debt ridden company in 1921. The debt was paid off in 7 years’ time, but the company accumulated debt again over next 6–7 years. Enter the legendary V.Shantaram, who offered Bal Gandharva a six film deal with Prabhat Film Company but the partnership was dissolved after just one film (Dharmatma, Classic film) in which Bal Gandharva was portrayed the role of Sant Eknath. Narayanrao revived his drama company in 1937, and soon formed an infamous association with Gohar Karnataki (also known as Gauhar Jan) who joined the company in April 1938. With Narayanrao increasingly ill at ease in female roles owing to his advancing years, the company was looking for an actress to play female roles.
The story of his rise to fame and his relationship with his mother, his wife, his co-actors and other women are all part of his celebrated life. But what adds to this amazing journey are the performances. Each & every actor has added life to their characters. Kishore kadam, Avinash Narkar, Vibhavri Deshpande & the others have done total justice. The cast is perfect. Now coming to the crew, Music by Kaushal Inamdar is just what a movie like this needed. Though marathi film lovers would have liked ajay-atul, Inamdar has done a good job. My personal favs are ”Chinmaya Sakal Hridaya” & “Parvardigar”. DOP by Mahesh Limaye is outstanding… Take a bow! Costumes by Neeta Lulla are beautiful & each saree makes you go “OOooh, I want this”. The use of colour is perfect. Make up artist (Vikram Gaikwad) is a magician, brilliant work! The producer & art director Nitin Chandrakant Desai (remember his brilliants sets in devdas, black) gets all the brownie points… A. For the lavish expenditure & amazing sets B. For getting a good team together.
Director Ravi Jadhav makes a comeback after Natrang with this movie. Natrang was also about a man donning the role of a woman (nachya). Comparisons were obvious, Natrang was a mega-hit & people were expecting an extravagant treat. The movie is a real treat for good cinema lovers and full marks to Ravi Jadhav for his work as the director. He has done a fab job.
Yes, I have reserved the best for the last! I never followed Subodh Bhave's body of work as a film actor, but he made me sit up & notice him in 'Haapus', where he did a fairly good job. However, Bhave has hit it out of the park with Balgandharva. He literally makes you cry, smile and clap for his classic performance. He had the grace, the “ada”, the charm & everything that an actor needs to portray the role of Balgandharva. Be it the scene where he cries looking at himself in the mirror when realizes he is mourning the loss of his only child on stage or the scene where he gets back home & breaks down… Subodh has proved that he is definitely of the finest actors in the Marathi as well as the Indian film industry today. One of my personal fav from now on… Kudos Subodh!
Overall, This movie has definitely made it to my ALL TIME FAV MOVIES list. Dont ask WHY, Go WATCH!!!!! “Balgandharva”… Thumbs up!
New 'Bebe' store at Bandra
Last week, I was invited to check out the new collection at the 'Bebe' store in Bandra. As we all know, Bebe is a popular international brand and the first Bebe boutique was opened in 1976 in San Francisco (Well if you didn't know, I am telling you now *wink*). It's a global label that embodies a sophisticated lifestyle. Well, we all know how popular the 'Bebe' basic Tshirts had become in some local thrifted stores some years back. Today, Mumbaikars have 3 'Bebe' stores. One at Infinity Mall (Malad), Phoenix Market City (Kurla) and the 2 month old store at Bandra.
The ambience of this store is nice. Located on the busy shoppers paradise Linking road, near other popular stores like Mango and UCB, the store can easily be located. Also, with four top brands under one roof (Inglot, Charles and Keith, QueUp and Bebe, all the brands are under Majorbrands in India), shoppers will definitely have a good time.

Kala Ghoda Festival 2012
Kala Ghoda festival entered its 14th year in Mumbai, earlier in February this year. With a footfall of more than half a million people this year, the festival is only becoming popular with every passing year. I managed to visit the fest on its last day i.e. 12t February, 2015. It was a bad decision to visit an art festival on a Sunday. Never have I seen SoBo look so crowded (except on weekdays. Otherwise, it wears a deserted look on Sundays). It was almost like the sight of Churchgate station on a weekday at 6:15pm, when hundreds of people are ready to kill each other for a seat in the Virar local.
As soon as I got down near the Parking lot area of Kala Ghoda, I felt like I was transported to the Kumbh mela. People were busy clicking pictures with practically everything. Even the man dressed up as Yama wasn’t spared. He became a celebrity, thanks to his Oh-So-Different costume! Many stalls were similar to the ones I had seen last year. Some of the NGO's from Orissa, Manipur etc were selling the same items that they did last year. A book sale caught my eye and I ended up buying some books at a great bargain (A complete Webster’s desk reference set for 99 bucks was a steal!)

Kala Ghoda festival is all about creativity and some wonderful work of art. Stalls are just an add-on. But when you have stalls selling a lot of items, people love pouncing on it even if they don't need to. I managed to click some good pictures of the installations at the Fest. Some of them were brilliantly made while some were a rip-off from last year’s fest. The traditional folk performances were mind blowing as always. The Vishal-Shekher concert didn’t interest me much like last year's Sonu Nigam concert did. I decided to click more pictures rather than hear them lip sync to some random song. Sadly, missed out on the Literature events this year (But, I guess Literature live at NCPA last year more than made up for everything).
I also happened to see some NGO's working for some amazing causes. They deserve special mentions here. The Sparrow shelter organization had some fabulous sparrow shelters, which is a need of the hour due to the dwindling numbers of this species. The shelters were reasonably priced at Rs 250 and Rs 350. It’s an amazing concept and I hope people buy these shelters to save sparrows from complete extinction.
Another stall was run by PALS. They have been working for plants and animals since 1993 (One of my favourite causes).I picked up some Tshirts to support their cause. Another favourite was handmade paper notepad made by students who are suffering from different disabilities. I also picked up some organic holi colours for the festival coming up in March. Yes, my shopping bag was almost full, but with items that were different. It was more of a contribution to a cause than regular crazy shopping.
The festival can definitely be termed as ‘Creativity at its best’. But next time, I'm NOT going to visit it on a Sunday for the plain reason that I need better clicks of the installations! And next year, I gotta take time out for the Literature fest as well. So until next time.,
Adios Black Horse!

New Store in Mumbai - Vinegar
Yesterday I attended my first store launch in Mumbai! It was fun. The store in question is 'Vinegar'. Yes! Vinegar fashion and styling studio (Bandra) has now shifted to Khar, with a fresh, new look and a new name, Vinegar Fashion India. It also has a new collection and a tagline that is bold and fun.Varsha Bhawnani was seen having fun with 'Vinegar' fan Bipasha Basu. Also seen were Anusha Dandekar and Anushka Manchanda picking up their favourites from the collection.
Well, coming back to the collection! It's quirky and fresh. As it's the summer collection, they had lots of apparel in Tangerine, Cobalt Blue, White, Lime Green among others. Items in the store range from Rs.600 to 4000. I noticed that some things were affordable which makes it a win-win combo
(Something you like + Affordable is always a plus point, no?). Let's take a look at some pictures that I clicked last evening (Got tons of piccies, but will put up pictures of items that I really liked)

When in Mumbai, take a day out to shop!
Summer vacations have started and I can see a zillion families who have come to Mumbai for a holiday. When I go somewhere, I make a list of places to see and most importantly, I always jot down a list of must buy items in my diary. After all, every city/village or country have markets which sell traditional items, be it food items, accessories or apparel. Even if it's not traditional, I make sure I pick up something as a souvenir. Like during my last trip to Konkan, I picked up tons of wooden toys and accessories from Sawantwadi.
When people visit Mumbai, they want to visit the Gateway of India, take a horse ride outside Taj Mahal palace and towers and pray before the beautiful Siddhivinayak idol in Prabhadevi.
But, do they have a shopping trip in mind too? If yes, then this list will help you to decide which place you should head to for some good, really cheap items.
Bandra (Hill Road) – We start with the Suburbs and what better than the most loved market place, Bandra. There are two popular street side shopping destinations - Hill road and Linking road. I’ve been buying
chunky jewellery and plain ganjees from Hill Road since ages. They have some
good, affordable items. Plus, if you are
good at bargaining like me, you will always get good discounts. Get down near the new Marks & Spencer mall (erstwhile Globus mall) signal and walk all the way till the St. Stanislaus High School junction. You will find street shops selling everything, from hair accessories to t-shirts, shorts and footwear. PS: Don't forget to visit the popular Mount Mary Church, which is 10 mins away from the St.Stanislaus signal.
Bandra (Linking Road) – It’s called
the ‘Haven’ for footwear lovers! The entire stretch near
National College has
tons of shops that sell chappals in all shapes, sizes and colours. You can buy Osho's, Ballet flats, Mojris etc. Also, you
will find street side shops that sell bags and t-shirts for cheap. Get down near the National College signal to get some real, street shopping experience.

Colaba Causeway – From suburbs, we move towards SoBo (SoMu or the town side, if you like it that way). After having a gala time at the Gateway of India, take some time out to shop. Colaba Causeway has got to
be on every Mumbaikar’s list, so I don't see a reason why you must miss out on this! I don’t shop here on a regular basis, but you can
find some amazing jewelry, bags, scarves and jholas. Although shopkeepers
here don’t bargain that much (they way they do in Bandra), but you MUST give it a try. You might go crazy after you find some amazing pair of earrings and funky bracelets, but keep calm and bargain on!

Crawford Market - Another popular shopping destination in SoBo, you will find travel bags and school bags at good discount. Pick up some healthy fruits from the market, especially mangoes. Visit Beauty Centre if you are looking at stocking up on some beauty favourites and then, walk towards Lohar Chawl to buy lights, lamps or knick knacks. Also, check out the amazing variety of fabrics and ready made garments available at Mangaldas market nearby. For the hungry soul, a stop over at Badshah for their amazing Kulfi and Falooda is a must.
Fashion Street - Located in the heart of Churchgate, this is another favorite with college students and shopaholics. From thrifted jackets to graphic tees and even fancy footwear, these guys stock up on everything. With an entire stretch, starting from the Old VSNL building to Metro cinema, dedicated to apparel and accessory stalls; you have a lot to choose from. Don't forget to bargain! There are a few stalls that have got labels like Asos, Topman and even H&M. You just need a little bit of patience and luck.

Dadar Market (Station road) – Love buying
knick knacks? Want to stock up on some essentials like safety pins and hair
pins? Dadar market is the place for you! You can buy fake traditional jewelry for cheap from small shops. You will love shopping for Sarees as this place is famous for saree stores (Dadar east and west). Choose from high end stores where you can buy sarees for festivals or head to the station road for stores that sell cheaper sarees for daily wear. Dadar market is famous for flowers, masala (spices), yummy Maharashtrian food and more! So take a day out to sample everything and take some home.
Gandhi Market – Situated near Shanmukhananda Hall, (Central south Mumbai, King's circle) this place is filled with shops that sell dress materials. They have dress materials that fits everyone’s budget! They also have shops that sell saree bags, jewelry boxes and hair extensions. You can also buy laces, buttons etc for DIY’s. They also have small shops that sell knick knacks for cheap.

Hind Mata Market (Parel) – This one
is a dress material haven! Also, those who like to experiment with
different materials on their dresses, saree blouse and love adding some bling, this is the place for you. You
will find tons of shops that sell different materials like PVC, Tikli, and
Satin etc. Also, you can use these
materials for DIY’s.
Dharavi - Women love bags! I am sure the women of your family won't live in peace till they buy some bags from here! They have around 50 stores that sell leather and faux leather items including bags, jackets, briefcases etc. The prices range from cheap to slightly expensive, but the items they sell are really good. Plus, you have so many shops to choose from.
Well, you can break your shopping trip into three days if you want to shop at ease!
Cover SoBo (Colaba and Crawford market) when you visit Gateway of India, Haji Ali etc. Next day when you visit Mount Mary church, ISKON temple etc, shop at linking road, hill road and Dharavi. Lastly, when you visit Siddhivinayak Temple, head to Dadar market, Hindmata and Gandhi Market.
If you think I have missed out any other important street shopping destination in Mumbai, do share it with us. There are areas like Lokhandwala market and Matunga market which are filled with some really good shops, but I decided to include some of my favourites, which are extremely popular.
Which is your favourite shopping destinations in Mumbai? Do them share with us.

Round up of the MET gala 2012
Wow! I am writing about the MET ball after a week. That's sad, I know. But, there should be some respite for someone giving exams, no?
The recently concluded MET gala, held at the costume institute in New York City, saw a bee line of fashionistas making their presence felt on the red carpet. Better known as the 'Oscars' of the fashion industry, MET gala 2012 saw some hits and misses yet again. Also, it was the first time that this event was streamed live on amazon.com/fashion. But I missed it, thanks to the entrance exam madness.
Anyway, most of the attendees were looking amazing. Here's a 'dekho' at the women who rocked the red carpet with their dresses and more!

'The Magical Nine' - Shahid Kapoor completes 9 Years in the Industry
It feels like just yesterday, when we saw a young, sweet
looking boy in a movie promo on TV. Back then Twitter and Facebook didn't exist
(I am talking about 2003), so we never got to know much about the response that
this particular movie promo got. People thought, it's just another college
flick that will hit the theatres and soon be forgotten, but little did they
know that it will mark the arrival of a new superstar. While the media was busy
going gaga over some star sons, a young boy, whose brilliant dance moves made
people go mad, became a new favourite amongst all the girls (and even boys, who
wanted to become like him). Today, after winning several awards, becoming an
inspiration for his fans and winning several hearts across the globe, the boy
has come a long way. Yes! The young boy is none other than - Shahid Kapoor, who completes 9 glorious years in the industry
today.
From Ishq Vishk to Mausam and now, his upcoming release
'Teri Meri Kahaani', we have seen Shahid in different roles. His constant urge
to experiment rather than follow the boring, typical path earned him accolades
from time to time. In fact, for the first time, fans will see Shahid in three
different avataars in 'Teri Meri Kahaani' where he plays Javed (A poetic,
lafangaa aashiq in 1910), Govind (A sweet chap in 1960's) and Krrish (The
modern, uber cool guy in 2012).
We all know how he landed a role in Ishq Vishk after
several auditions and rejections. The fact remains, Shahid believes in the
philosophy 'Never say never and Never give up' and that's one thing that his
fans (like me) have learned from him.
He was a student and later, an instructor at the Shiamak
Davar Institute of the Performing arts. He has inherited this special talent
from his beautiful mother, Neelima Azim, who is a trainer Kathak dancer. Shiamak loves Shahid and
considers him to be one of the top dancers in the country today. I remember Shahid once said, "I remember an incident. Once Shiamak was very angry and threw a
chair at me during rehearsals". I think, all good performers get a little
punishment from their 'Guru', after all behind the anger, there is immense love
that is hidden somewhere.
His early films say him play the sweet, romantic
chocolate boy. In Ishq Vishk, we saw him as Rajiv Mathur. His acting skills won
everyone's heart and his confidence earned him all the 'Best debutant' awards
that year. Not just that, his popularity amongst girls and guys alike got him
offers from some of the best directors in the industry. All his movies had
different, unique plots. In 2004, he played Jai in Fida followed by movies like
Deewane huye Pagal, Shikhar (One of my favorite Shahid Kapoor movie, which
earned him his first Best actor nomination at Screen awards) etc.
His biggest breakthrough was Vivah, directed by Sooraj
Barjatya. He was paired alongside his Ishq Vishk co-star Amrita Rao. This movie
made people smile, cry and shed tears every time they saw 'Prem' on screen.
Shahid's flawless acting earned him many Best Actor nominations that year and
millions of Fans as well.
Then came the film we all love! Come on, I don't think
there is any girl (Or to be precise, A fan of Shahid) who doesn't like Aditya Kashyap. Jab we met came ONE full year after Vivah. No
doubt, Shahid's fans missed him on screen. But, those 365 days of 'No Shahid on
Screen' were compensated with the release of this beautiful film. Its an all
time favourite and I heart Aditya Kashyap. Shahid Kapoor was brilliant
SUPER DUPER Brilliant as Aditya in this magical romantic comedy. In fact, I feel
he was almost close to Mr.Darcy from Pride and Prejudice. Those magical eyes
hidden behind the specs, mushy smile, formal clothing, geek meets cute heart
look *Sigh* Ahem! See, I was transported to dreamland for a minute. But, that's
the magic of Shahid Kapoor in Jab We Met. Of course, How can I forget Mauja
hi Mauja and Nagada, his dance moves had a dhamakedaar effect on girls. Jab we
Met is close to my heart for various reasons, but it's also close to Shahid's
heart as it earned him his first Best Actor trophy at the Stardust Awards and
several nominations at various award functions.
Then, *Dhan Te Nan* Something rather unexpected happened.
We know Shahid loves experimenting, but he went in for a complete makeover and
came out in a never before seen avataar. He stunned everyone with those six
pack abs, long locks and a dashing attitude. Kaminey saw Shahid in a new
avataar and a double role. One was Charlie (A character played by Shahid that
has the biggest fan following), whose 'F' ko 'F' bolta hoon lingo caught
everyones attention and then there was Guddu, who stammers. He is seen
promoting safe sex but his girlfriend, the 'Home Science Topper' pulls him into
the trap he wants other people to come out of, unsafe sex. This fantastic film
was nothing less than a roller coaster ride, filled with some amazing dialogues
and a strong plot. Moreover, Dhan Te Nan (a song from this film) became an
Anthem worldwide, becoming one of the first hindi songs to be played at the
Ministry of Sound. Shahid's brilliant portrayal of Charlie and Guddu earned him
many awards, including Best Actor at Screen and Stardust awards, along with
several other nominations and he was also honoured with the 'Rajiv Gandhi
Award' in 2009.
Post Kaminey, Shahid continued his success spell, with
some good films like Badmaash Company under the YRF banner, that saw him play a smart con
man named Karan. We also saw him bag some wonderful endorsement deals with VIP,
Clinic all clear, Pioneer to name a few. More the endorsements, More the
chances of seeing him on TV. We all know he is a pro at it, after all his first
advertisement was shot way back in the Early 90's (Complan) followed by some
more ad's in his teens, the most popular one being the 'Pepsi' ad with the cast
of 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hain'. But those were just normal 'ads' where he was a
model, the ones that were shot after he became an actor made him the brand
ambassador.
Shahid then dedicated 2 years to an ambitious project,
which was directed by his father, Pankaj Uncle (I call Pankaj Kapoor, Pankaj
Uncle out of respect). 'Mausam' is very close to Shahid's heart. It was not
just a film, but also an opportunity for Shahid to spend time with his father.
Shahid's fans were dying to see him on the big screen after a year and a half.
The 'Mausam' album is brilliant. Songs from this film are soulful, they touch
your heart and soul. They top the playlist on my iPod and 'Rabba' has become
one of my all time favorites after 'Aao milo chale' from Jab We Met! Mausam got
delayed due to several problems but ultimately, it won the hearts of Shahid and
his co-star, Sonam's fans. Shahid Kapoor's portrayal of SQ leader Harinder
Singh earned him the title of an 'Excellent Actor'. Critics loved his
performance in the film. It's a pity that he didn't earn any nomination for
this film, but for his true fans, Mausam is undoubtedly amongst his best films
so far. He also became the first Indian actor to fly the F-16.
Throughout his career as an actor in Bollywood, we have
seen Shahid contribute to several organisations as well. Be it the 'Go
vegetarian' campaign for PETA or the 'Greenathon' by NDTV where he adopted 5
villages and promised to pay for the solar lamps distributed there, Shahid has
taken part in several social activities from time to time, without making a big
issue out of it. He is known to be a warm and kind hearted person amongst his
group of friends. He is also believed to be a follower of the Radha Soami
philosophical organisation.
To conclude, Shahid Kapoor has made a huge difference
to the lives of those who like love him. He has been a huge source of
inspiration for several fans out there. He has come a long way in life, from being a 22 year old newcomer to an
experienced yet very down to earth 31-year young man (Though I still like to
call him 'Forever 21' - Not the brand). I am sure, his 'Shanatics' can
only pray that their 'Sasha' keeps walking on the path of success.
Shahid, I congratulate you on
completing 9 wonderful years in the industry! Be the person that you are for
life, Keep smiling the way you do for life, Keep making us smile with your
films for life.

Shirdi
Outfit Post - The Birthday trip
OOTD's are generally planned in advance or in some cases, are planned an hour or two in advance. But you dress up on your Birthday anyway, right? So this post has some pictures from my two day Birthday trip to Shirdi, which was filled with exam preps stress and some excitement too. But, I decided to keep those books away on my special day, to avoid getting a headache. Also, I started to miss my long hair a lot, but the short crop made me feel better, especially in the crazy afternoon heat, which almost touched 40 degrees.
I couldn't go out for my yearly shopping ritual with dad (although my sis and mom are my shopping partners, curbing the urge to shop more and helping me choose the right outfit is only best done by dad), better known as 'The Grand Birthday Shopping' day. So, I opted for a dress I had picked up a fortnight before my birthday, paired it up with the Tresmode kitten heels (My dream of buying Steve Madden pumps on the GBS day with dad were shattered, thanks to exams) and wore a spiral necklace along with a ring. I could have done a lot more, but then, there is always a next time (especially with birthdays, as they come every year). I used MAC's Kajal pencil on my eyes and for my lips, I mixed two lip colors, Revlon lipstick - 'Cherries in the Snow' and NYX lip creme - 'Milan'
Also, I usually wear a traditional outfit for the early morning Pooja in the temple. So, I got myself a bright orange kurta and purple leggings. Again, the make up was simple with some Kajal (MAC kajal pencil) and MAC's Morange lipstick.
And now, some pictures from the Birthday Bash (My idea of a bash is a private affair with family, in Shirdi of course).
Some Chocolate cake for all of you. Thanks for being such wonderful sweethearts!
Dress: Mango
Kitten Heels: Tresmode
Accessories: Bandra
Ethnic twist for the Pooja. Bright orange Kurta with a dash of purple and gold.
PS: Wondering why I don't have any footwear on? Simple, we decided to ditch the footwear at home and head straight to the temple, as the footwear counter outside the temple was all messed up. This picture was taken outside our Hotel room.
Kurta: Haute Curry
Leggings: Shopper's Stop
My family made sure I have a wonderful time on my special day. It's a different story that I had to go through a crazy exam the very next day. Also, I would like to thank all my amazing 'Tweepleos' (Yes! I call my twitter followers that), fans, followers and friends for making my day special with their wonderful messages. Love you all!!
Is your Birthday coming up? Let us know, would love to give you a Shout out on Twitter!

It's raining 'Combs' (Haircare)
It's been quite sometime since I did a post on anything! Yeah, times are crazy, especially when you have exams. But now that they are over (which also reminds me that I have some entrance exams this month) I can happily blog away. The weather has been acting quite weird this year, with rainfall in the konkan region in April, which means NO 'Pure Alphonso Mangoes' (Yeah! I don't like anything but Alphonsos, That's called being a true 'Konkan Patyachi Princess' LOL).
But, this post is not about mangoes! We are discussing something else.
We all love our 'Good hair days'. We love using different kind of hair products to make sure that your hair gets everything it needs to keep looking good. But very few people invest in good hair tools, especially combs and brushes. We have seen women carry a small comb in their make up pouches and even men, removing a teeny weeny plastic comb from their pockets to set a few stubborn strands straight. But is that pocket comb enough to keep bad hair days away? Think again.
In this post, we will concentrate on the needs of a good comb and Top 5 combs you must own.
A good comb is a must if you want your hair to look good and maintain it that way everyday. The market is filled with tons of combs and we tend to pick up any comb thinking all of them do the same job. But the fact is, every comb available in the market has it's own pro's. No matter what hair type you have, it is very important to have combs with various spacing between the teeth. As buying all the combs in the market from the Styling, Dressing, Wide toothed etc range won't be possible for everyone, here's a quick look at some combs that should become a part of your 'Essentials' kit.
1. All purpose styling comb
A styling comb is a must. Styling combs are very useful as they can be used for lots of hair styling routines. These fine toothed combs can also be used to apply products to your hair.

Top 5 books by Indian writers in English
My bookshelf is filled with several books by Indian authors. Though not everyone may like the kind of books I love to read, I have tried to create a list that includes books that are my favourite and are also well known titles. So, here's presenting my list of Top 5 books by Indian authors you must buy and read! (in no particular order).
Do not judge this book by those 1500 odd pages. A suitable boy is one of the best books that I have read so far. As the title suggests, the central theme of the story is a mother's hunt to find a suitable boy for her daughter. Set in India during the early 1950's, fresh after partition, it provides a window into the culture & history of India during that time. The opening section of the novel itself attracted me towards it. I couldn't stop reading till I finished the last page of the book. As I finished reading the book, I just felt - "Wish it could just go on forever." Yes, the book is worth Rs 799, but it is worth every penny. The author is a pure genius. His book "An Equal music" is next on my wish list now!
2. Midnight's Children - Salman Rushdie
This one earned Salman Rushdie a Booker prize in 1981 and also the Booker of Bookers prize in 1993. Midnight's Children was the 2nd novel written by Rushdie. It's the story of Saleem Sinai whose life is destined to follow the ebb and flow of India’s own fortunes. He is telepathically linked to the other children born in the first hour of India’s independence, all of whom have their own gifts.
One of my favorite authors, Amitav Ghosh, penned one of my favorite books from the Ibis trilogy. The rave reviews received by this book urged me to buy it and well, it turned out to be one of the most amazing novels I have read till date. It is a contemporary story. The main characters in this novel are Piyali Roy, a young marine biologist and Kanai Dutt who is a businessman from Delhi. The novel explores humanism & environmentalism in an interesting way, Specially when they come in conflict against each other. The Morichjhanpi massacre incident of 1978-79, when the government of West Bengal forcibly evicted thousands of Bengali refugees who had settled on the island, forms a background in some parts of the novel. Amitav Ghosh's style of writing is splendid. His stories always travel throughout time and space. His writing has an asymmetrical flow. I also love the mixture of fact and fiction in his writings. Oh well, I won't give out all the details so soon. So I suggest you go out and buy this book. Amitav Ghosh has touched upon a lot of social issues in this novel. Other books by Amitav Ghosh that you must read include - The Ibis trilogy (Sea of Poppies, River of Smoke), The Glass Palace.
I have always wanted to explore author Sudha Murthy's work. She has written many novels and I have read 3 of them. But personally, I really liked Mahashweta. This fabulous piece of work is so emotional. The novel was first written in Marathi by Dr. Sumati Kshetramade, and was also adapted into a TV series. Later,Mrs Murthy wrote the book in Kannada, which dealt with the same theme. I was awestruck by the character of the protagonist, who goes through major ups and downs in life due to Leukoderma, which is treated in India as a curse. Although the book looks simple with little pages (when compared to books like A suitable boy or The Hungry tide), the impact of this book is big! It took me just 4 hours to finish this book, but the story has left a long lasting effect on my mind and heart. It is definitely a book lovers delight. Also read Sudha Murthy's "Gently falls the Bakula", which is also very well written!
The Great Indian Novel is a Satire. A fictional work that takes the story of the epic, Mahabharata, and recasts as well as resets it in the context of the Indian Independence movement. The novel has 18 books within the book (very similar to the Mahabharata). The author very cleverly begins the story with Mahabharta as reference and then juxtaposes our prominent freedom fighters and leaders in his story (Characters like Ved vyas, Amba, Pandu in Mahabharata are referred to as C.Rajgopalachari, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Subhash Chandra Bose respectively). The main protagonist of this novel is Bhishma Gangaji, a combination of Mahabharata’s Bhishma Pitamah and the father of our nation, Mahatma Gandhi. What surprised me the most is Tharoor's narration and the concept of the novel. It is so fascinating! Books like The Great Indian Novel teach us that our Mythological stories are so versatile, that they can be retold in 100 different ways and yet, each adaptation will sound different from the other. These stories can continue to entertain us for centuries to come. A must read for those who love to experiment (Ahem, This one is an award winning book, So read it anyway. You can't afford to miss it).
Note: There are many other books that feature on my "Must Read" list of books, which maybe better than the ones that feature on my list right now. They maybe updated in another list.
