5 Times Mindy Kaling Impressed Us With Her Outfits | Style Files
Anonymous
Tuesday, November 10, 2015
Dr. L aka Mindy Lahiri aka Mindy Kaling is my spirit animal. I just know it! And she has been making a whole bunch of heads turn with, not just her recently published “Why Not Me?”, but also her fabulous outfits! If you watch her show (YOU MUST!), you will know that Kaling is all about mixing prints with prints, neon hues, the blings and all that jazz. And she sticks to this image even she is not Dr. L. Here is my feeble attempt to list out five of her “OMG, I want this” outfits.
When she pretended to wear a one piece
At the Cannes premiere of Inside Out (she was the voice actress for Disgust), Kaling wore, what looked like a one piece gown, a two piece outfit designed by her favorite Salvador Perez. I am not sure what I loved more, the bright colors or the general idea of the outfit!
When she channelled her inner desi girl
For the PaleyFest, Mindy went all Indian with the ethnic Persian blue and gold kurta with a front slit, blue churidaar and a slight dull gold pair of heels. The outfit was from Frontier Heritage and is on my list of outfits for the next Indian (or non-Indian) festival I attend.
When she toned it down
Kaling is usually in the brightest of them all. But that doesn’t mean that she can’t do them dull colours. This Tory Burch outfit is so cute. The printed blouse, suede skirt and boots, not to mention that perfect red lip are so ideal for a sunday brunch situation!
When she went all pink
This was, by far, one of my favourite Mindy Project outfits. Look at all that pink! It was a very classic look, the coat, printed dress and satchel. Only Mindy can wear all that pink and not resemble cotton candy.
When she...who am I kidding, just look at this outift!
Do I really have to spell out why I want to steal this from her?!!!!!!

5 Most Anticipated Films of 2015 | Cinema
Just one more fortnight and we will be down to the last quarter of the year. One of the most crucial ones for Bollywood, honestly, because this is where most of the big ticket projects will hit the marquee, thanks to the ongoing festive season. Most films have already reserved a festival date for themselves, way in advance, in order to ensure that not just their target audience, but every cine-goer enjoys their dose of entertainment during the long weekend. While there are several films, like Jazbaa, which marks the return of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Talvar (based on the Arushi Murder Case), and even the well promoted Akshay Kumar starrer Singh Is Bliing, which looks promising; we have shortlisted 5 films which are not just making the right noises, but have also left the audience curious and excited for the film's release. Let's take a look at the top 5 films that we can't wait to watch this year (in order of release date)!
Shaandaar
Right from the motion poster, to the trailer and finally the first song launch, this film is killing it with its fun and quirky appeal. Most Bollywood fanatics have been quite curious to see just how well will the Shahid - Alia jodi fare, considering it is the first time they are doing a film together. And well, not only did the trailer shun the naysayers with some sizzling (and cute) chemistry between the two, the endearing chemistry shared by Shahid and his off screen papa, Pankaj Kapoor, also left a delightful smile on our face. With Vikas Bahl helming the project after his award winning and much loved, Queen, and the Karan Johar + Phantom + Fox Star Studios producing it, Shaandaar is gonna be one helluva joyride. Save the date! It's coming this Dussehra (October 22).
Prem Ratan Dhan Payo
A Diwali release + Salman Khan = can't you hear firecrackers bursting out loud already? Prem Ratan Dhan Payo marks director Sooraj Barjatya's return as the captain of the ship after 9 years (his last directorial venture being Vivah, starring Shahid Kapoor and Amrita Rao). While we all saw actors like Hrithik Roshan and Shahid Kapoor taking over the lead as Prem for sometime, in 2015, the original Prem - Salman Khan is all set to get into the groove once again. The actor will be seen opposite Sonam Kapoor and the film is said to be yet another Barjatya style family drama, filled with emotions, grand set ups and melodious songs (we hear this album will have as many as 10 tracks). With Sunny Deol's Ghayal Returns pushed to a later date, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo will enjoy a solo release during the Diwali week. Dear BO, hope you are ready to handle the madness on November 12!
Tamasha
Imtiaz Ali, Ranbir - Deepika, and exotic locations. Now, do you still need a reason to watch the film? Tamasha has got everything going for it, right from the cast, crew to stunning locales that one can see in all the official stills. The film marks hit pair Ranbir - Deepika's return and it also happens to be the second time these good looking actors will be working with Imtiaz Ali (while Ranbir has worked with him in Rockstar, Deepika did Love Aaj Kal). While the buzz around this film in both social and print media is very strong, the makers are currently using social network platforms like Facebook and Twitter to put up fun sneak peek videos. One of the recent ones even had Ranbir messing up all the official social media handles of Tamasha. Exclusive stills from the film are also being shared from time to time, which is generating a strong buzz among film lovers. We are quite sure this terrific combo is all set to break records once again!
Bajirao Mastani
Sanjay Leela Bhansali's epic saga, Bajirao Mastani, is one of the most anticipated films of 2015. We all know this was SLB's dream project, that kept waiting in the wings due to cast issues for several years. Now that the film is on the verge of completion, all the updates and teasers are leaving us excited and thrilled. For someone who has grown up reading a lot about the Maratha and Peshwa history, it will be a delight to watch SLB's version of the classic Bajirao - Mastani love story, on the big screen. Keeping in mind the kind of larger than life films that he is known for, we are quite sure that SLB's dream project will win our hearts. With a stellar star cast that includes Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra, who look their part and have got into the skin of their characters with ease, this is one film to watch out for on December 18! We can't wait for the theatrical trailer and music album now.
Dilwale
What better than watching two of our favourite romantic leads - Shahrukh Khan and Kajol - making a return to the silver screen after My Name Is Khan. Ever since the first look still of Dilwale was officially released, all hell broke loose. People on social media went crazy, tweeting and posting updates, while expressing their thoughts about the return of SRK - Kajol. Director Rohit Shetty is one lucky fella. He got SRK to do the 'Lungi Dance' in Chennai Express, and now he is making the actor run around in snow (this time with Kajol), while shooting a song in Iceland. The film is almost complete and it also stars teenage heartthrob Varun Dhawan and actress Kriti Sanon. The ensemble cast will also include Johnny Lever and Sanjay Mishra. But while Dilwale promises to set the cash registers ringing, it will also ensure a major clash with yet another big film. Dilwale will release during the Christmas week - December 18, which also happens to be the release date of Bajirao Mastani. It won't be wrong to call this the clash of the titans. But while their ultimate fate will only be known on the 18th, one thing is for sure - On December 18th, love will be in the air!
Which film are you most excited about? Is it on this list?

My family means everything to me - Varun Dhawan | Exclusive Interview
With just three films behind him, actor Varun Dhawan took a plunge, the sort that very few actors his age would even think of. Shedding his lovable, boy next door image, Varun opted for a script that sees his character age from 20 to 40, with an emotional, revengeful journey as the backdrop. To top it all, his look and personality in the film, Badlapur, is a far cry from the usual, cheerful Varun that we are all used to seeing. But the actor took up the challenge quite confidently and after watching the promos, we must say, he has done a damn good job.
We caught up with the extremely talented and lovable twenty-seven-year old at Mehboob Studios on a busy weekday. The actor, dressed in casuals with a Badlapur badge displayed prominently on his T-shirt, was juggling multiple interviews in between several other commitments. But the moment he was informed that the legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar was shooting in the adjacent studio, he ran to catch a glimpse of him and like a true fan boy, got pictures clicked with the legend as well. "It is okay to go all fanboyish in front of Sachin sir" he stated, before settling down for a fun chat. Excerpts from a delightful conversation with the actor:

"It is okay to go all fanboyish in front of Sachin sir" he stated, before settling down for a fun chat. Excerpts from a delightful conversation with the actor:
You seem to have lost a lot of weight. Any particular reason?
(smiles) Yes, I have and its for my role in ABCD 2. We have got some crazy dance rehearsals going on for that. Also, my Badlapur producer Dino (Dinesh Vijan) is making me dance around a lot.
So, what was the transition from a boy next door to a revengeful, more mature character like for you?
See, if you want to take a revenge, you need to be like the next door lover boy first. It is only when you love someone truly, madly and deeply, that you can go all out to take revenge against someone who has caused harm to your love.
What was it about this script that attracted you first?
The very fact that Badlapur is the kind of a film that the audience is yet to see, and I can vouch for that. Sriram Raghavan is known to make unconventional films, and I am quite sure that will come across once you watch the film. It is much more than just a revenge drama. This film is very hard hitting.
Were there any apprehensions about working with Sriram Raghavan, since his last film, Agent Vinod, didn't do quite well?
Not really. I react more to stories and the kind of rapport that I build with the director. There are several directors who have made bad films, but then, went on to make good films as well. My father has also done bad films and still, delivered some really big hits. I have always felt Sriram is a great director and as a story, Badlapur really stood out for me.
At any point, did you feel you were taking a risk?
To do a film like Badlapur, which most people thought is a risk, I had to tell myself that yes, I have established a connect with my audience. Because only when you make a connect like that, can you convince the audience to accept the actor in different shades and character,
How difficult was it for you to get into the skin of Raghu, your character?
It was a tough task, no doubt. I am nothing like Raghu. I am a very happy person. After portraying certain roles in the past, I had become a lot like them. But, Raghu is nowhere close to the person that I am, nor do I want to become like him (laughs). The anger and frustration in him is something else, and I don't really get angry so easily. This was the kind of an anger that you can see in one's eyes.
How did you prepare yourself, mentally and physically, for the role?
A lot of mental and physical preparation went into the making of this character. Sriram had planned everything in advance. Major portions of the film were shot in Igatpuri, where we spent several days without electricity. I think that helped, because when you stay away from comfort and gel with the surroundings, you connect with the personality of your character and stay with it. During the filming, I would mostly stay alone and talk very less. So, that was a process that I had experienced for the first time as an actor, and it did affect me a lot. Also, we went through several workshops for the film, before we started shooting.
What was the reaction from your family when you first accepted the script?
Comedy is an amazing genre, where everything that you do is great fun. Even when you are doing a comedy film, you feel happy from within. But when you work in an emotional drama like Badlapur, you start behaving and talking in a different way, and the character takes over your personality. Maybe that's one reason why my father was a bit scared initially. Thankfully, it was Sriram sir's belief in me and my work, as well as my brother Rohit's encouragement, that helped me to confidently go ahead and work on this project wholeheartedly. Also, solely focusing on this film helped.
From a student to lover boy and now, you have also graduated to playing a father for the first time in a film.
(laughs) Well, I tried to pick up nuances from here and there. And although I am twenty-seven in real, there are several people who get married at a young age, so playing a father wasn't really tough. I also observed my brother, who is married, as well as a few other cousin brothers, who are now fathers. I noticed how they behaved, turned into kids in front of their wives and how they spoke to their kids among other things.
Were you expecting the kind of response that Badlapur's first look and promos received on the social media?
The response was overwhelming. And honestly, the media's constant support also played a key role. Badlapur is not a big film, as it is made only on a budget of 25 crore, including P&A (promotions). All of us in the film have taken a fee cut, but if Dino can support a film like this, then that is the least we can do (smiles). So, this is actually my least expensive film. Also, a lot of people felt that this is a niche film, so despite all those assumptions, the kind of coverage and buzz that this film has received was incredible.
Did you add your inputs in the promotional activities?
All these Badlapur tees, sweatshirts, jackets and badges that you have seen me sporting during all the promotional activities was my idea (smiles).
When the first look of Badlapur released, a lot of people compared your look to that of Shahid Kapoor in Haider. How did you react to that?
That is a good thing, because I have seen Haider and I absolutely loved the film as well as Shahid's performance. The only thing important for me is to see Badlapur do well. I want to see how the audience reacts to my performance and the film.
How difficult was it for you to move from a film like Badlapur and then, start shooting for Any Body Can Dance 2?
Very difficult. I would actually end up taking my angry mood home. But fortunately, with ABCD 2, we started by filming two songs. So there, I had to just learn the choreography and dance. It was only later that we started working on the important scenes. In a way, ABCD 2 is like a complete rehab for me (smiles). Although its too early to talk about the film, I have tried several different dance forms, and contemporary is one of them.
So, how excited are you about ABCD 2?
A lot! Again, its not like any other usual dance film. We are doing a dance film in 3D, and that requires everything to be done in a different way. The positions, requirements and the shooting style is different. That's something new for me.
Will we see you working with your brother, Rohit, anytime soon?
Of course, my next film is with Rohit. The film is titled Dhishoom and will also star John Abraham and Jacqueline Fernandez.
How do you think have you evolved as an actor?
What is your biggest takeaway from Badlapur?
The fact that family means everything. If I ever imagine a life without my life, it would be very difficult.

I have learned how to disconnect from everything when I am filming. As in, disconnect from the technical process. It is important to just focus on your character. Like, while working on action oriented scenes or a gimmick, you need to be aware of the technicalities to create that atmosphere. But when it comes to an emotional film, you have to forget ki koi technicality exist bhi karti thi, So, one has to unlearn a lot of things according to the situation.

Exclusive | Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge bids adieu!
As much as I didn't want to believe this piece of news, it is actually true. An official statement from Yash Raj Films has confirmed that after a historic 1000 week run, 20 years later, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge made its final curtain call at the iconic Maratha Mandir this morning. As we write and edit this post, the last group has already left Maratha Mandir after watching the very last show.
Post the 1000 week celebrations at the theater in December 2014, the theatre had requested Yash Raj Films to change the show timings for DDLJ. Instead of the 11:30 am show, they were keen on shifting it to a morning slot at 9:15 am, as it was difficult for the cinema to accommodate multiple new releases every week with just 3 regular shows. Of course, YRF obliged from 13th Feb 2015. However, while the theatre management was happy to continue the film for as long as it continued to draw in the audiences, owing to logistical issues of their staff having to work at inordinately long hours in order to accommodate an additional early morning show, it was mutually decided to end the film's historic & record breaking run *cries*.
We got in touch with Mr.Manoj Desai, managing director - Maratha Mandir, who also confirmed the news. "While it is surely a sad moment for us to part away with this record breaking film, we had to be practical and understand that it had run its course. Moreover, I wanted to make sure that new films get the four main shows of the day, which wasn't possible earlier, as Dilwale Dulhania... had occupied the 11:30am slot. For us, the main criteria was to see the film break multiple records at Maratha Mandir, which it ultimately did and ended up going places. With the 1000 week run and Valentine's Day over, we thought this was the perfect time for us to take the plunge. The tickets were extremely cheap and since most channels would air the film almost twice a week, very few people would make it to the theatres. Both the parties mutually agreed to end the run, and from tomorrow, I'll have two shows each for the new films - Badlapur and Monsoon."
After playing for 1009 uninterrupted weeks, the film's unprecedented performance has come to an end at the Maratha Mandir. The film played out one last time at the 9:15 AM show today. As a fan, it will surely be sad moment, as watching the film at this iconic venue had its own charm. Also, it is a little disappointing that all this happened all of a sudden (otherwise, Team Dancebee would have booked the tickets for this iconic last show). But despite all the disappointment and shock, this endearing film with one of the most charming romantic couples will continue to live in our hearts forever.

Shamitabh was the best thing that happened to me - Dhanush | Exclusive Interview
Admit it, we have all loved his performance in Raanjhanaa. And then of course, the country danced to his tunes, when this talented artist crooned "Why this Kolaveri di?" But, this versatile actor is much more than just that. For someone who was already a superstar down south, he made a rather quite and humble entry in Bollywood with the Sonam Kapoor starrer in 2013. A two year long wait (and a few more super hit films down South) later, Tamil industry's blue eyed boy, Dhanush is back with his second outing in Bollywood. And this time, he has scored a biggie with none other than Amitabh Bachchan. The promos of their stylish and intriguing flick Shamitabh are already creating waves.
Ask him about his character in the film and prompt comes the reply, "Well, my character... (pauses) I don't know. You have to see the film to know about it. Yaar, what to do? You ask Balki. He has to be blamed for this, not me. I can't say anything." While they continue to build the suspense, within a week of Shamitabh's release, he will have another much anticipated Tamil film called Anegan hitting the screens on February 13. Dhanush fans, meanwhile, are going crazy on social media, praising the actor's look and dialogues in the two films. But this down to earth artist does not allow any form of hype or hysteria to affect his work. Very few actors of his stature have such dedication and honesty. And during one of our recent interactions with Mr. Bachchan, the legend too couldn't stop praising his co-star.
Each day on the set was like a learning experience. I observed him (Amitabh Bachchan) a lot
We met the actor for an exclusive chat on a weekday, in between several promotional activities that were lined up across a few states. After hours of different interviews (and repetitive questions for sure), Dhanush looked exhausted and didn't feel too well. He had an early morning flight to catch. But throughout the interview, not once did he show it on his face or act like he needed someone to look after him. Instead, he welcomed us with a huge smile and hug, made us feel comfortable and then, settled down for a lovely conversation. Excerpts from an inspiring and honest interview with the extremely versatile actor, one half of Shamitabh - Venkatesh Prabhu Kasthuri Raja aka Dhanush:
Two films in two weeks in the same month. How excited are you?
(Smiles) Well, the promotions for Shamitabh are on a bigger scale and since this film releases first, all my energies are focused on it. Once Shamitabh hits the screens, I will have a week to promote Anegan, which should be good. February couldn't have got better. I am very happy.
Working with the legendary Amitabh Bachchan in your second Bollywood film must have been quite an experience.
Working with him was nothing less than an adventure. I was very excited and thrilled. Each day on the set was like a learning experience. I observed him a lot. It was a phenomenal experience to watch the legend himself perform live in front of my eyes.
I have nothing to lose, so I am free to experiment with my characters. Also, I am aware that I am not really the quintessential hero material
Absolutely! In fact, I am just happy to be a small part of it. I couldn't have asked for a better second film. I have been trying to mix my characters as much as possible. But down South, there is a certain of image of me that has stuck, so I am restricted. Here, I have nothing to lose, so I am free to experiment with my characters. Also, I am aware that I am not really the quintessential hero material. Plus post Raanjhanaa, the scripts that came my way were very similar. Some were actually good, but I just thought they were not apt for me. This wait was definitely long and agonizing, but Shamitabh was the best thing that could happen.
Tell us about K.V.Anand's Anegan. The trailer looks very promising.
At its core, the film is a love story and shows how love finds its way against all odds. It is very different from the kind of films I have done in the past. There are different looks and set ups involved. It was definitely one exciting project and will be one of my biggest Tamil releases, with 400+ screens in Tamil Nadu and some 1000+ screens overall, excluding the Hindi version. I couldn't have asked god for anything better (smiles).
Did it help having a challenging and emotionally packed film like Raanjhanaa as your launch vehicle, in order to put a firm foot in Bollywood?
That film means everything to me. It's like my identity card. Even if I shower the best of praises and compliments on Raanjhanaa, it will never be enough. I am what I am in Bollywood today because of that film.
I couldn't complete my education, nor can I speak good English. I haven’t experienced college life. But today, I feel like it hasn't been that bad a journey
Talking about your beginnings, what was it like being a part of a film family?
It's not like the typical film family stories. I have seen my father struggle and work really hard. During his younger days, my father worked in a mill and our family lived in a very small room. We would go days with just one meal. So yes, I have seen poverty up close during my younger days. My father would pen a lot of stories. After working in the mill, he used to come home, write stories and sell it to people, who would then sell the same stories to film makers, calling it their own. It was through one such contact that he got a break in the Tamil film industry as an assistant director. He worked hard for almost 15 years before making his directorial debut.
Your journey from a 16-year-old newbie to the Superstar down South has been quite something. Was acting always on the cards?
Not really. I was more keen on becoming a Marine Engineer. At 16, I wasn't ready to do get into films and would often cry. My father wanted to start filming within a week and was looking for a school boy to play the role, so he asked me to step in. Today, I am glad I didn't take a step back. It is only with time and a few films down the line that I realized, I cannot do anything else. I suffer from stage fright and just being around people makes me nervous. But, when I am in front of the camera, I feel comfortable. I couldn't complete my education, nor can I speak good English. I haven’t experienced college life. But today, I feel like it hasn't been that bad a journey. 30 films, a National award and being in the industry for more than 13-14 years makes you realize that it has all been worth it.
How did you handle the early criticism that came your way?
More than the critics and my work, I was more worried about how my friends or relatives would talk to me. In addition, I knew that my looks would be criticized. But being a director’s son, I understood that only the script and your performance matters, not looks. The script, that may look like mere pages, can create a star out of an actor, no matter how he looks. And the same can bring him down too. So, I don't think about criticism, competition or anything. I just put my blinders on, read scripts, focus on the projects and allow my work to do the talking.
The script, that may look like mere pages, can create a star out of an actor, no matter how he looks
Has the pressure of being Superstar Rajinikanth's son-in-law affected you?
It doesn't affect me. I am a huge, huge fan of him. I have always been happy to be his son-in-law and our relationship is extremely precious to me. Call me his son-in-law, fan or even a driver, it will still be an honor. As for the pressure, I don't really take it. I allow my films to speak for themselves. If the audience likes my work, they will eventually know and appreciate me for who I am.
Vela Illa Pattathari was your 25th film down South. After hitting one milestone after another, how do you look back at your journey as an actor?
While I can't thank god enough for all that he has bestowed upon me, I feel 25 films is very little for me to turn and look back. Maybe, I will be more comfortable to answer this when I cross 50 films (smiles).
So, what's next for you after Shamitabh?
I prefer taking one step ahead at a time and like taking things as they come my way. After Shamitabh, as I mentioned, there is Anegan. Then in Hindi, I will be doing Aanand.L.Rai's next film, which is a love story. In Tamil, I am working with director Balaji Mohan on a family entertained titled Maari, which is a name, the first look of which was revealed in November last year. And then there is my production venture titled Kaaki Sattai, which releases on February 27.

I tend to trust peope very easily - Sonam Kapoor | Exclusive Interview
She is not your quintessential 'heroine', who likes to maintain a one hand distance while talking to the media. Nor is she a diplomatic actress, who will count her words before making anything public. Far from the clubs formed within this industry and mutual admiration societies, Sonam Kapoor is busy building her own empire. At 29, the actress has pretty much achieved everything that any other girl could only dream of. From making the paparazzi and fashion mavens from across the globe go gaga over her red carpet choices at the Cannes to becoming the first Indian Disney princess, Sonam has done it all.
Sonam is one of the very few female actors who will always impress you with her sartorial choices. For someone who can tell her Prada from Gucci, the actress is always well turned out (she credits some of it to her sister Rhea). We meet her in between a long day of interviews at a suburban hotel and as always, the chic actress left us impressed with her outfit of the day; a Geisha Designs dress . But even before we could compliment her look, she exclaimed, "I love that shade of red lipstick on you. Is it the Pure Red collection by L'Oreal? (laughs) That colour perfectly compliments your skin tone and looks lovely on you." That, of course, came minutes before we congratulated her for looking gorgeous in the new L'Oreal Paris campaign. All we could do is grin and feel happy to get a flattering remark from the fashionista, who can make even the most boring days Mondays brighter with her presence and excellent responses. Yes, she is an absolute delight when it comes to interviews.
With this week's release Dolly ki Doli, Sonam is all set to con her way into your hearts. The promos are already catching up, and so are the songs. She is pretty much the 'hero' of this film with a long list of Dulhas still waiting for Dolly to return and the actress confessed that she can't wait to see the final audience reaction this weekend. Excerpts from a 'cray cray' (if I am allowed to say so) conversation with fashion's own sweetheart - Sonam Kapoor.
During an earlier interview, you had mentioned that you always like to prepare for a role before getting down to filming it. Was it the same with Dolly ki Doli?
Yes, of course! So, I did some solo workshops, some sessions with the director and then, there were group workshops with my co-stars. As part of my research, I also saw a few films, read some stories and also went through some YouTube videos. But in order to get into the character, I would make occasional notes and try to understand Dolly's past. Like, how she would behave or react to a certain situation. The film only focuses on the period of 15-20 days in her life and the running time is just around 90 minutes or more. So, it was important for me to understand, what exactly made her the way she is.
What was it like to step into Dolly's shoes?
The thing about Dolly is that she is completely the opposite of me. She thinks a lot before speaking (laughs), which I am not known for. Dolly is extremely calculating and everything that she does is planned. She knowingly becomes what her target (the guy) needs. She cons a guy by becoming the dream woman of his life. So yeah, it was difficult, because being someone else is never easy.
The thing about Dolly is that she is completely the opposite of me. She thinks a lot before speaking, which I am not known for
Since you con different people, will we see you sport different looks in the film?
Oh yes! So, she visits each of these guys in a different avatar. And when she is back to being Dolly, she has a completely disparate look. I think when you see the film, the audience will understand what I am talking about. I want you to see it for yourself and tell me how distinct each looks are (smiles).
Did you expect the kind of reaction that your first look in Dolly ki Doli got from people across the globe?
Honestly, I know that every time a poster or still from my film is revealed, everybody comments on my look. It just goes hand-in-hand, you know. I can't help it now (laughs). Everyone was talking about the mismatched outfit and a glimpse of the sneakers in Khoobsurat's teaser poster. But the reactions that I got for Dolly ki Doli was ridiculously crazy. It was all over the place. I kept thinking, maine toh bas lehenga pehna hain yaar! But that was the whole idea, to show the audience a glimpse of my character. One bottle of daru in hand, aviators, sneakers paired with a lehenga-choli and a leather jacket. That helped building a connection.
Your character is on a conning spree. But personally, have you ever been conned?
(laughs) Well, I have been conned. Quite a few times, actually. The fact that I am so straight forward and honest makes me believe that everyone around me is like that. Also, I tend to trust people very easily and I am extremely gullible. I guess a lot of people take advantage of that. Ah! I don't know about conning, really, but a lot of people do take advantage of me. Eventually, I do find out about it, but as I said, I am just silly enough to fall into such traps sometimes.
I tend to trust people very easily and I am extremely gullible. I guess a lot of people take advantage of that
Do you think you are comfortable in a romantic or comedy space, when compared to any other genre?
I guess, people enjoy seeing me in comedy or in real girl roles. When it comes to any genre, I don't think I have mastered anything or made myself comfortable in any space as such, because I am still a novice at everything. Contrary to my images, the characters that I portray on screen are always different. I think, people have liked seeing me in roles like Bittu (Delhi 6) or Zoya (Raanjhanaa); so I guess this is what the audience wants me to be.
Do you love experimenting and prefer variety, quality over quantity?
Absolutely! Every film or character that I have taken up is different from the other and have never done flower pot roles. Be it Aayat (Mausam - a role that is extremely close to Sonam's heart) or Bittu (Delhi 6), I always hope that my characters are remembered, whether in good or evil way. Like post Raanjhanaa, my Twitter mentions were flooded with hate messages. Stuff like, "You bitch! Kundan ko aise kaise chod diya," was something that I got to see everyday. So, I opt for unique projects on purpose and don't believe in repeating what I have portrayed once on screen. Every morning, I want to look forward to work and trying something different each day on the set. I want to put myself in situations that are alien to me, because that's the only way you can grow, not just as an artist, but also as a person. It gives me an opportunity to hone my craft, meet new people and learn from them as well. Monotony is a turn off, trust me!
As an actor, how difficult or easy is it to move from one project to another, especially when you are dealing with an emotionally packed character or film?
Oh, I remember how after Raanjhanaa, I was a wreck. I had lost almost 6kgs by the end of the film. We shot the film chronologically and when you see it, you will notice a distinct wear and tear. Especially during the second half of the film. I have cried without using glycerin. It took me at least four-five months to get out of that and felt literally empty. But after Raanjhanaa, it was a delight to work on a beautiful film like Khoobsurat, which was extremely positive, all things pretty and happy moments. So, working on Khoobsurat was like a rejuvenation. I needed films like Khoobsurat and Dolly ki Doli, before moving on to any project that is gonna be tougher on my psyche.

Which film in your journey so far do you treasure the most?
I would say Aisha. While working on this film, my sister was 21 and I was 23, totally stupid and young. In fact, had the film released maybe two-three years later, I think we could have done a much better job. When we started out, there was zero support. Dad was shooting in LA and we were literally going pillar to post, in order to get someone to make this film. And well, we used our father's name to get funding. "We are Anil Kapoor's daughters. Could you please make this film?" (laughs). Dad had no idea about this and we used his name like how! People were actually believing that we are rich, spoilt brats. But, they don't realize that we really worked hard on it. We got all our friends to help us, be it Pernia (Qureshi), Kunal (Rawal) or even the cinematographer; they are my friends. We tried to do the best we could with the budget that we had and used our own clothes. A lot of people thought it was a bunch of rich kids making a film about rich brats. But, it was Emma, after all. She wasn't like the characters in other Jane Austen novels, with ideals or deep thoughts. She was a spoilt brat who wanted to get married and Aisha was just that. A fun, happy chick flick! Also, this film made me realize that Rhea is my true partner. We had the best time making this film.
Your cousin, Arjun Kapoor, has always showered praises on you. What do you have to say about him?
He is like my jaan ka tukda. Arjun is like a teddy bear; extremely soft hearted and huggable. Very few youngsters in today's generation have this innate goodness. He is a good guy and a great brother to me, Rhea and Anshula. We have all been very close since childhood. He has gone through a lot and come out it beautifully. Also, I think he is extremely talented. Like, one on hand, he can do a 2 States and then leave you speechless with a Gunday as well.
My brother (Harshvardhan) is ridiculously hard working. I have been working for seven years and have never seen anyone work as hard as him

And then, your brother Harshvardhan is making his debut as well.
Yeah! Well, he is a couple years younger than me and is a really good looking guy. You know, I have always believed that hard work is the only thing that can get you anywhere in life. But in this industry, hard work and luck need to go hand-in-hand. My brother is ridiculously hard working. I have been working for seven years and have never seen anyone work as hard as him. He likes to take things to another level and I think he is very lucky to be doing a film with Rakeysh Mehra sir. He met Rakeysh on the sets on Delhi 6 and worked out everything on his own. Hopefully, he will be lucky as well (smiles). I think, if he has good luck with him, then he will be the biggest star in this country. And yeah, I do have a little bias too (laughs).
What do you think is a sure-shot success formula for a film in today's day and age?
If your film is a damn good film, then I think it will work and will build a connect with the audience. Unless, you have a Shah Rukh Khan or Salman Khan (smiles). Then, that's like a phenomena. Every film starring Salman has smashed the box office records. He is someone who is in the league of say, Michael Jackson, Rajinikanth sir, Rajesh Khanna; a phenomena that just comes once in a lifetime. I think, even my dad had that thing in between. Yeh log jo bhi karte hain, log jaake dekhte aur pasand karte hain. For mortals like us, the film needs to pack a punch. And that's where the audience loyalty also comes in. Like, a lot of people have watched Khoobsurat and now, they wanna watch Dolly ki Doli. But otherwise, I just feel the trailer itself creates an impact and gives you the vibe of whether a film is going to be liked or not.
So, how's Prem Dhan Ratan Payo shaping up?
Very well. I have worked with Salman Khan in Saawariya and here, its like a re-hash of it. He is a kind hearted person with tons of talent. God! When he walks in, you know a star has arrived. We all feel like ordinary mortals. He is extremely hot!

Food-tastic | Pineapple salad
This week, in our aim to present some lip smacking yet simple and quick healthy food items, we have got a pineapple salad for you. The scrumptious salad is a good mix of veggies, with some chicken/tofu (we have got an option for fellow vegetarians) and the yummy, tangy taste of pineapple. This salad is rich in Vitamin C, with some proteins and can help those who are looking at adding a few kilos (in a good way) to balance their weight.
Ingredients
1 small onion
3 slices of pineapple
3 leaves of iceberg lettuce
250gm Chicken breast/fish/tofu
(any one, depending on your choice)
Dressing:
½ tsp salt
½ tsp pepper
½ tsp oregano
1 tbsp mayonnaise
(you can choose the egg-less variety, if you are a vegetarian)
Method:
- If you choose chicken or fish, first boil and grind it in a mixer for a few minutes (please refrain from grinding it too much) / or / if you choose tofu, mash it lightly with your hands.
- Cut the onion into rings
- Cut the pineapple into thin pieces
- Finely chop the iceburg lettuce
- Take a big bowl and add the minced chicken/fish/tofu, onion rings, lettuce and pineapple pieces.
- Now, take a small bowl and mix the dressing ingredients together (mayonnaise, salt and pepper)
- Add the dressing in the big bowl and mix all the ingredients well.
- For the plating, put the salad with some pineapple pieces next to it. Finally, sprinkle a little bit of oregano before serving.

Food-tastic | Quick Egg Salad
Good food and fitness go hand in hand, and we personally don't believe in diet fads. Starting today, Diary of a Dancebee will bring you healthy recipes, which are quick, easy to make and good for health too. This week, we have got a fun breakfast recipe - a Quick Egg salad, which is not only filling, but also quite high on the health meter (and let us add, the Dancebee can't eat this. She swears by vegetarianism. So, she whipped up the same dish by replacing Egg with Tofu).
To make this delicious salad, you will need:
2 boiled eggs
4-5 cabbage leaves (cut in square pieces)
1 onion (finely chopped)
Some freshly chopped coriander
For the dressing you will need:
1 tbsp tamarind plup
4 tbsp tomato ketchup
1 tsp chilli powder
1 tsp salt
1 tsp cumin powder
Method
1. Boil water in a pan with 3-4 glasses of water.
Put the two eggs in the water and let it boil for 10-12 minutes
2. Peel and cut the egg into long pieces
3. Take a big bowl and add the cabbage, chopped onion, green chilli and coriander
4. Take another bowl and mix all the ingredients required for the dressing
5. Once the dressing is ready, pour it into the bowl of vegetables (leave a little bit of the dressing for the eggs).
Make sure the veggies are mixed well with the dressing.
6. On the serving plate, arrange the eggs and place the salad next to it.
Take the remaining dressing and pour it on each egg.
Your Egg Salad is now ready to serve!

5 Reasons why we love R... Rajkumar
So, its been a year since the Shahid Kapoor - Sonakshi Sinha starrer R... Rajkumar hit the screens (Wow! A year already). Yes, you read that right. This high-on entertainment, roller coaster ride of a film released this day, last year and went on to earn the highest opening weekend collection for Kapoor at the box office. Watching the film at a single screen theater for a treat, with people whistling, singing, and some, even creating a group to dance together on Gandi Baat, almost as if the others had gathered for a karaoke party and not a film. Those who know me will tell you that I saw the film four times at different theaters, purely because of its entertainment value (and Shahid Kapoor, of course).
While we can list down a zillion reasons why we love this film, to celebrate this day, we have got the top five reasons as to why we love R... Rajkumar and can't get enough of its awesomeness.
1. Saree ke fall sa and Gandi Baat
They were playing it here, they were playing it there. Well, they were playing these songs everywhere. Both Saree ke fall sa and Gandi Baat became an anthem of sorts, especially during the marriage and party season last year. In fact, the fever did not die down till Holi this year, where we heard people blasting this number on full volume at celebrations. These two fun, quirky tracks were also a favourite at the Ganpati immersion processions this year.
PS: The Dancebee has got these two songs on the loop, all the time.

4. The Cast and Director Prabhu Dheva
Instead of roping in several people and having a huge ensemble cast, Prabhu Dheva just had a few key characters and each actor chosen to play the part did perfect justice to their respective roles. Be it Sonu Sood as the baddie Shivraj or Ashish Vidyarthi as the crazy Mamaji and even Mukul Dev. Even Sonakshi was perfect as the muffat village girl, who doesn't give a damn. Shahid Kapoor? *coughs* Let's reserve this for later. And of course, how can we forget Prabhu Dheva, who churned out this mass entertainer, which made people turn back to the cinema halls for watching this film again and again.
5. Shahid Kapoor
Let's just say we couldn't have asked for a better Romeo Rajkumar. Everyone who has seen this film will agree that Shahid Kapoor was the soul of this film. He danced all the way into our hearts, in a never before seen avatar. At a time when haters and negative folks were busy pooh-poohing his choices, he took up the challenge of turning into a village romeo, mouthing filmy dialogues and performing stunts like never before. Falling down, injuring himself while dancing and venturing in to a new zone was definitely a huge risk. But he eventually came out with a beaming smile and tons of success, something that all the Shanatics (and I am) quite proud of.
So, this weekend, in case you are planning to just take the cosy route and snuggle up inside a comfortable blankie to watch a film, watch R... Rajkumar and be entertained!
Love
The Dancebee

2. The Dialogues
Admit it! If you love a good, masala drama, then chances are that you have laughed your heart out while watching this film. Especially at some insane dialogues and situations. "Silence ho jaa, varna main violent ho jaunga" is one favorite dialogue that we will all swear by. Then we have got the scene where Shahid tries to save an old man, who instead of being thankful, says - "Paani, paani. Ice milega?" Then you have got the evergreen Asrani, who keeps the humor flow going with his Bhavishyavaani. But the 'height' of humor (quite literally) is the conversation between Shahid and Sonakshi, where she tells him - "Teri toh height bhi nahin milti mujhse," to which he says, "Height veight se kuch nahin hota. Pyaar dil se hota hain." That's what we call, 'heights of filmyness'.

3. The Choreography
Have we told you, innumerable people have tried their hand (and feet) at the signature steps of songs like Gandi Baat, Saree ke fall sa and Mat maari among others? Yes, its true. Vishnudheva and Prabhu Dheva have done an impeccable job with the choreography. If there is anyone who has pushed Shahid to come out of his comfort zone as a dancer and experiment with new moves, it is them (and Shahid confessed the same during an earlier interview, where he mentioned that Prabhu Dheva comes from a totally different school of dancing, which was a challenge for him). Be it the floor chunk of movements performed by Shahid and Prabhu Dheva or solo chunk performed by Shahid in front of a mahal and earlier, in the song opening of Saree ke fall sa, we can't help but laud the choreography in this film. If you haven't tried those moves already, do it, I say. We have already got a routine ready.
