13 Years of Shahid Kapoor | 5 Favorite Performances
OMG! Look who has completed 13 years in the industry. It was this day, back in 2003, that we saw Shahid Kapoor make a dhamakedaar debut in Ishq Vishk. Since then, the actor has never looked back. For someone who entered the Indian Film Industry at an early age, Shahid has experimented with a variety of different genres, worked with some of the finest directors, production houses and the best female actors. Apart from films, the actor has time and again proved his incredible dancing and hosting skills at various award functions.
The result? Millions of fans (8.3M on Twitter alone, to be precise) across the globe and multiple fan-bases worldwide, where members keep increasing at the speed of lightening. And those moves! Gosh, how can anyone not love the way he dances? So, picking a few favourites from 24 unique films is no mean feat, especially if you are someone who has seen all of them on repeat. But still, we present to you our favorite Shahid Kapoor performances.
Haider
Let's start off with the film that enjoyed a successful award spell last year! Shahid's impeccable performance as Haider Meer in this film made sure that leaves the theatre min blown, including me. Hamlet aka Haider was a challenge that Shahid accepted with great confidence and his dedication was hard to miss. He got into the skin of his character with great ease, connected with the audience through an array of emotions, gave the film his all and ultimately, proved that his acting prowess is unmatched. Critics, take that!
Jab We Met
We all love Jab We Met, don't we? And we can't help but fall in love with Shahid Kapoor memorable portrayal of the adorable Aditya Kashyap. Like imagine, The Aditya Kashyap, the guy who falls head over heels in love with the jhalli Geet, and goes all the way till Shimla and Manali looking for her. Shahid breathed life into Aditya (India's answer to Mr.Darcy) with his calm and natural performance. The way Shahid essayed Aditya's character with perfect style and charisma is a good example of how even the most simplest of characters can stay with you for good.
Kaminey

Usne F ko F bola, and that was enough for the entire nation to stand up and take notice of him. It was amazing to see Shahid's successful transition from a lover struck boy in Kismat Konnection to playing complex characters in the following year. He took things a notch above by shedding his boy next door for a more rugged, tapori avatar in Vishal Bhardwaj's Kaminey. It made for a visual treat, the kind of cinema that you wouldn't mind watching back-to-back in a cinema hall. The film presented a never before seen side of the actor. In this sinister plot, with the perfect mix of violence and dark humour, Shahid played the role of twins with speech defects and boy, he sure did a fantastic job!
Vivah
The film did great business at the box office, and it further established Shahid as not just the fun-loving college going boy, but also someone who can play the part of a mature, supportive lover with ease. This film was a high point in Shahid's third year as an actor, as the film earned him a lot of accolades and acclaim. Plus, he played the epitome of love in Sooraj Barjatya films - Prem, quite convincingly. With the perfect blend of emotions, subtle charm and that adorable look, we surely enjoyed watching Shahid in Vivah.
R... Rajkumar
Shahid teaming up with Prabhu Dheva was enough to get us jumping with joy. While most critics may differ with our opinion (I don't know why), R... Rajkumar was one of Shahid's exceptional performances. He was everything that a massy hero of a masala film would require. Action, drama, dance aur emotion; you name it and Shahid nailed them all. The actor confessed that it was quite a task to step into the shoes of a masala action hero, especially with all those moves that Prabhu sir made him do, but we couldn't have had it any other way. Nobody can do a Gandi Baat or Saree ke fall sa like Shahid can. Also, Silent ho ja, varna main violent ho jaunga is one cool dialogue.
Ahem!
So, while I am done with that tough task of putting together a top 5 list (in random order), I would like to add one more film. Although it went largely unnoticed (unfortunately), I really thought Shahid's performance as the ambitious Karan in Badmaash Company made quite an impact.
We can't wait to watch Shahid create magic with two completely different characters - that of a rockstar and a war soldier in his upcoming films, Udta Punjab and Rangoon. We have been trippin' on Chitta Ve already. What about you?
Got a favorite Shahid Kapoor film or want to wish the actor on completing 13 years in the industry?

10 Bollywood Films to make your Valentine's Day Special
Admit it, we have all tried to find solace and smiles in a romantic film. Be it watching a mushy moment on your iPad after a grueling day, or re-watching something on television only because it gives you pure joy. We have all got that one happy, romantic film that we swear by. Ask me, I have got a super long list of such adorable movies. Since its the Valentine Weekend and not everyone has planned a day out (cause single folks be like - party toh abhi shuru hui hain, but there ain't no 'Yaar tera karlega handle' happening). So we decided to put together a fun list of Top 10 romantic Bollywood films, that will make your weekend special. We did a vox pop with our friends, readers and fans, asking them about their all time favorite romantic films. The result (in no particular order)? Well, find out for yourself! PS: The list is pretty exhaustive, we know. But our list features the films that got maximum votes.
1. Jab We Met
Everybody knows how much I love this film. Its on my iPad, laptop and there are 2 DVD back ups too (for days when channels don't show JWM for days). But when we got down to counting the votes, I was surprised to see how almost 57 per cent of the voters had nominated Jab We Met, making it the most loved romantic film of our poll. This is one film that makes me realize, that a good film may not always break box office records. What matters is, if people really remember it after years. Apart from going on about how much I adore Aditya Kashyap, I must add that I equally love Geet. One can relate to her at so many levels. *runs to watch JWM again*
2. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge
The baap of all romantic films ever made in Bollywood. We all love to love DDLJ, don't we? The beautiful tale of Raj and Simran, that taught practically every 90s kid about love. Everyone has seen this film multiple times and yet, we can't help but watch it on repeat today.
3. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani
There were several folks who voted for this film! Obviously, who doesn't love this film? More so, because they can't stop loving the RK - DP pair. One could certainly relate to the plot here, with many girl-fans adding that they could connect to Deepika's character - Naina. The film has several sweet moments, that may make you wanna hunt for someone similar to Bunny aka Kabir (it was Ranbir's portrayal that made this character so lovable).
4. Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak
Talk about reel love affecting real life couples so much, that they even tried attempting suicide (WHAT! Don't try such silly things). Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak made Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla overnight stars, with several girls skipping a heartbeat for Khan, whose reign as the chocolate boy continued for several years. Again, a film filled with the right amount of lovey-dovey moments and emotions. Enough to make you smile and a cry in a span of three hours.
5. Vivah
Okay! Let me just confess - my Twitter mentions were flooded with Shanatics voting for this film. This film is everything that you can expect from an ideal, sanskaari romantic couple. It certainly has its share of emotions, drama and some really adorable moments. In fact, channels often air this film on repeat, since it earns them a lot of TAM ratings from the interior areas of the country. While a huge section continues to diss at people who like this film, let me just say this loud and clear - HOW CAN YOU NOT LOVE THIS FILM? PREM IS SO ADORABLE! *sings Mujhe haq hain*
6. Kuch Kuch Hota Hain
Karan Johar's directorial debut, that ruined many friendships (pyaar dosti hain, remember), while Mrs.Braganza changed the concept of English Literature classes. Nevertheless, we absolutely adore this Rahul-Anjali-Tina love triangle. So much that by now, we know all the dialogues, situations and scenes by heart (I can almost imagine two friends - they know who they are - enacting some of those scenes now. KKHH fanatics, I tell you).
7. Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa
This happens to be a personal favourite. One of Shah Rukh Khan's most amazing performances till date and one of his own favourites, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa made for a light hearted, mushy, fun film that can be seen on repeat at any given time of the day (some scenes can also make you cry). And yes, one can't help but sympathise with SRK's character - Sunil. The film also teaches you that true love can come your way again, only if you look for it (and maybe, you can get super lucky, like Sunil does. He lets go of Suchitra Krishnamoorti, but meets Juhi Chawla in the end. Get the point?)
8. Hum Aapke Hai Kaun
The Big Fat Indian Wedding, and the drama that follows. This film is pure entertainment, with oodles of cute romance between Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit-Nene. It was Sooraj Barjatya who gave Bollywood its first romantic - drama blockbuster after Mughal-e-Azam, and boy, people just couldn't get enough. Its the kind of film that you can enjoy on Valentine's Day, even with your family.
9. Saathiya
Every individual who has seen this film will tell you how much they loved Vivek Oberoi and Rani Mukerji's chemistry in this one. Also, the songs were so magical (Chupke se is one helluva beautiful song). It was the kind of mad, passionate love that drives their characters to elope, only to realise that life is not all that hunky-dory post marriage. In fact, I know a classmate from college who once stated that she came to Mumbai, only to find someone on a local train, who would be as passionate a lover as Vivek's character - Aditya. Hmmm... Okay then!
10. Veer Zaara and Goliyon ki Raas Leela...Ram Leela
While one is all about passionate love, the other shows eternal romance. These films received equal votes and ironically, both showed how the society and their own families forced the lovers to separate. Veer Zaara is the perfect example of a classic romantic couple, who get separated due to man-made boundaries, only to be reunited after years. It certainly was one of Yash Chopra's finest films. Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Goliyon ki... Ram Leela was a Desi adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, where Ranveer and Deepika's crackling chemistry made several jaws drop. Both these films are in a league of their own and make for a must watch with your loved one.
And, ahem! Why didn't anyone vote for Kal Ho Naa Ho? I love that film!
See, even Aman Mathur is in tears now.
See, even Aman Mathur is in tears now.
Most Loved Marathi Film
Mumbai-Pune-Mumbai
A simple, yet adorable film shot mostly in Mumbai. There is so much to love in this film - the characters essayed by Swapnil Joshi and Mukta Barve, the locations, dialogues and even songs. The film was also remade in Telugu with the name - Made in Vizag. Well, every Maharashtrian of my generation (and even the other) swears by Mumbai-Pune-Mumbai, and so do I!
Most loved Hollywood film
PS I love you
Official adaptation of the immensely popular book by Cecilia Ahern (by the same name), this Gerald Butler and Hilary Swank starrer won the poll, after beating some iconic films like Sound of Music, Titanic and Pride & Prejudice (my personal favourites, actually). Isn't the title enough for you to hold hands with your loved one and enjoy this romantic film with a difference?

'The Magical Nine' - Shahid Kapoor completes 9 Years in the Industry
It feels like just yesterday, when we saw a young, sweet
looking boy in a movie promo on TV. Back then Twitter and Facebook didn't exist
(I am talking about 2003), so we never got to know much about the response that
this particular movie promo got. People thought, it's just another college
flick that will hit the theatres and soon be forgotten, but little did they
know that it will mark the arrival of a new superstar. While the media was busy
going gaga over some star sons, a young boy, whose brilliant dance moves made
people go mad, became a new favourite amongst all the girls (and even boys, who
wanted to become like him). Today, after winning several awards, becoming an
inspiration for his fans and winning several hearts across the globe, the boy
has come a long way. Yes! The young boy is none other than - Shahid Kapoor, who completes 9 glorious years in the industry
today.
From Ishq Vishk to Mausam and now, his upcoming release
'Teri Meri Kahaani', we have seen Shahid in different roles. His constant urge
to experiment rather than follow the boring, typical path earned him accolades
from time to time. In fact, for the first time, fans will see Shahid in three
different avataars in 'Teri Meri Kahaani' where he plays Javed (A poetic,
lafangaa aashiq in 1910), Govind (A sweet chap in 1960's) and Krrish (The
modern, uber cool guy in 2012).
We all know how he landed a role in Ishq Vishk after
several auditions and rejections. The fact remains, Shahid believes in the
philosophy 'Never say never and Never give up' and that's one thing that his
fans (like me) have learned from him.
He was a student and later, an instructor at the Shiamak
Davar Institute of the Performing arts. He has inherited this special talent
from his beautiful mother, Neelima Azim, who is a trainer Kathak dancer. Shiamak loves Shahid and
considers him to be one of the top dancers in the country today. I remember Shahid once said, "I remember an incident. Once Shiamak was very angry and threw a
chair at me during rehearsals". I think, all good performers get a little
punishment from their 'Guru', after all behind the anger, there is immense love
that is hidden somewhere.
His early films say him play the sweet, romantic
chocolate boy. In Ishq Vishk, we saw him as Rajiv Mathur. His acting skills won
everyone's heart and his confidence earned him all the 'Best debutant' awards
that year. Not just that, his popularity amongst girls and guys alike got him
offers from some of the best directors in the industry. All his movies had
different, unique plots. In 2004, he played Jai in Fida followed by movies like
Deewane huye Pagal, Shikhar (One of my favorite Shahid Kapoor movie, which
earned him his first Best actor nomination at Screen awards) etc.
His biggest breakthrough was Vivah, directed by Sooraj
Barjatya. He was paired alongside his Ishq Vishk co-star Amrita Rao. This movie
made people smile, cry and shed tears every time they saw 'Prem' on screen.
Shahid's flawless acting earned him many Best Actor nominations that year and
millions of Fans as well.
Then came the film we all love! Come on, I don't think
there is any girl (Or to be precise, A fan of Shahid) who doesn't like Aditya Kashyap. Jab we met came ONE full year after Vivah. No
doubt, Shahid's fans missed him on screen. But, those 365 days of 'No Shahid on
Screen' were compensated with the release of this beautiful film. Its an all
time favourite and I heart Aditya Kashyap. Shahid Kapoor was brilliant
SUPER DUPER Brilliant as Aditya in this magical romantic comedy. In fact, I feel
he was almost close to Mr.Darcy from Pride and Prejudice. Those magical eyes
hidden behind the specs, mushy smile, formal clothing, geek meets cute heart
look *Sigh* Ahem! See, I was transported to dreamland for a minute. But, that's
the magic of Shahid Kapoor in Jab We Met. Of course, How can I forget Mauja
hi Mauja and Nagada, his dance moves had a dhamakedaar effect on girls. Jab we
Met is close to my heart for various reasons, but it's also close to Shahid's
heart as it earned him his first Best Actor trophy at the Stardust Awards and
several nominations at various award functions.
Then, *Dhan Te Nan* Something rather unexpected happened.
We know Shahid loves experimenting, but he went in for a complete makeover and
came out in a never before seen avataar. He stunned everyone with those six
pack abs, long locks and a dashing attitude. Kaminey saw Shahid in a new
avataar and a double role. One was Charlie (A character played by Shahid that
has the biggest fan following), whose 'F' ko 'F' bolta hoon lingo caught
everyones attention and then there was Guddu, who stammers. He is seen
promoting safe sex but his girlfriend, the 'Home Science Topper' pulls him into
the trap he wants other people to come out of, unsafe sex. This fantastic film
was nothing less than a roller coaster ride, filled with some amazing dialogues
and a strong plot. Moreover, Dhan Te Nan (a song from this film) became an
Anthem worldwide, becoming one of the first hindi songs to be played at the
Ministry of Sound. Shahid's brilliant portrayal of Charlie and Guddu earned him
many awards, including Best Actor at Screen and Stardust awards, along with
several other nominations and he was also honoured with the 'Rajiv Gandhi
Award' in 2009.
Post Kaminey, Shahid continued his success spell, with
some good films like Badmaash Company under the YRF banner, that saw him play a smart con
man named Karan. We also saw him bag some wonderful endorsement deals with VIP,
Clinic all clear, Pioneer to name a few. More the endorsements, More the
chances of seeing him on TV. We all know he is a pro at it, after all his first
advertisement was shot way back in the Early 90's (Complan) followed by some
more ad's in his teens, the most popular one being the 'Pepsi' ad with the cast
of 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hain'. But those were just normal 'ads' where he was a
model, the ones that were shot after he became an actor made him the brand
ambassador.
Shahid then dedicated 2 years to an ambitious project,
which was directed by his father, Pankaj Uncle (I call Pankaj Kapoor, Pankaj
Uncle out of respect). 'Mausam' is very close to Shahid's heart. It was not
just a film, but also an opportunity for Shahid to spend time with his father.
Shahid's fans were dying to see him on the big screen after a year and a half.
The 'Mausam' album is brilliant. Songs from this film are soulful, they touch
your heart and soul. They top the playlist on my iPod and 'Rabba' has become
one of my all time favorites after 'Aao milo chale' from Jab We Met! Mausam got
delayed due to several problems but ultimately, it won the hearts of Shahid and
his co-star, Sonam's fans. Shahid Kapoor's portrayal of SQ leader Harinder
Singh earned him the title of an 'Excellent Actor'. Critics loved his
performance in the film. It's a pity that he didn't earn any nomination for
this film, but for his true fans, Mausam is undoubtedly amongst his best films
so far. He also became the first Indian actor to fly the F-16.
Throughout his career as an actor in Bollywood, we have
seen Shahid contribute to several organisations as well. Be it the 'Go
vegetarian' campaign for PETA or the 'Greenathon' by NDTV where he adopted 5
villages and promised to pay for the solar lamps distributed there, Shahid has
taken part in several social activities from time to time, without making a big
issue out of it. He is known to be a warm and kind hearted person amongst his
group of friends. He is also believed to be a follower of the Radha Soami
philosophical organisation.
To conclude, Shahid Kapoor has made a huge difference
to the lives of those who like love him. He has been a huge source of
inspiration for several fans out there. He has come a long way in life, from being a 22 year old newcomer to an
experienced yet very down to earth 31-year young man (Though I still like to
call him 'Forever 21' - Not the brand). I am sure, his 'Shanatics' can
only pray that their 'Sasha' keeps walking on the path of success.
Shahid, I congratulate you on
completing 9 wonderful years in the industry! Be the person that you are for
life, Keep smiling the way you do for life, Keep making us smile with your
films for life.
