Top 10 Marathi Films - Part 1
Regional cinema offers a variety of genres and deals with diverse issues, which sometimes even a mainstream Hindi film cannot. It connects with the local people in a easier way, thanks to the language and dialect. Moreover, for urban citizens like me, it helps us to connect with our cultural, our roots and ahem, learning the language in an entertaining way. Yes! I have learnt a lot about different Maharashtrian dialects, all thanks to Marathi films. I don't really remember the 1st Marathi film that I saw, but I have been regularly catching up with Marathi cinema of late, both old and new, thanks to my parents (their film collection) and channels like Zee Talkies, Star Pravah among others. There are many films like Mi Sindhutai Sapkal, Jhing chik Jhing which still top my 'List of movies to Watch," but here I present to you the Part 1 of Top 10 Marathi movies (in no particular order) which I can watch over and over again. I personally recommend you watch these films even if you don't understand the language (Err... Subtitles will help you anyway).
Please Note : Classics do not feature in this list.
Natrang (2010)
Starring Atul Kulkarni, Sonali Kulkarni,Kishore Kadam
Directed by - Ravi Jadhav
The film is an adaption of Dr.Anand Yadav's book, Natrang (Artist). The film, directed by Ravi Jadhav, is about a farmer whose dream is to become an artist & play the role of a king. It traces the journey of Guna (Atul Kulkarni) who overcomes hurdles to realize his dream. The film is set in Rural Maharashtra during the 1970's. It also deals with the issue of Gender Bias. This film gave me goosebumps! Trust me, No one could have played the role of Guna the way Atul Kulkarni did. He went through a lot of training for this film. Apart from the direction, performances and an amazing storyline, the music also played an important role in helping the film become a huge hit. Ajay-Atul, the National award winning duo, composed some beautiful songs for Natrang. Be it the Lavani number "Mala jau dya na ghari" or the song that traces the journey of an artist "Natrang Ubha", almost every song from this album became a household hit. The film is a must watch for those who love art & for those who love meaningful cinema. This one has it all. A flawless film!
Ashi hi Banwa Banwi
Starring Sachin,Ashok saraf, Siddharth & Laxmikant Berde
Directed by Sachin
This one's a complete laugh-a-riot! One can never sit with a straight face when this film is playing on the television. Brilliant dialogues & an even better screenplay, This comedy directed by Sachin Pilgaonkar, released in 1988. Four boy and their hunt for a rented house, lands the group into a big soup, when the new landlady demands that only couples can stay in her house. With no other option left, Sachin & Laxmikant Berde dress up as women & pose as Ashok saraf & Siddharth's wives. That's when the real roller coaster ride begins! Performances by the entire Cast is outstanding. Dont miss the scene where Laxmikant Berde is shown as a pregnant lady & Is made to sit on a cardboard moon, all decked up. ROFL!!
Jatra
Starring Bharat Jadhav, Kranti Redkar, Vijay Chavan, Siddharth Jadhav
Directed by Kedar Shinde
This one is a must watch for all those who love to laugh till their tummy hurts! I can never forget the long, serpentine queues outside Bharatmata, where people were ready to push each other for a ticket. This went on for around 2 months after the release. People dressed up and arrived at Bharatmata as if they were going for a marriage and actually ended up standing in a never ending queue. Jatra was a Mass-Blockbuster. The song Kombdi Palali can still make even a non-dancer perform, 6 years after its release. In this film, Sidhu & Monya leave their rented house, where they are forced to pay or work as a laborer and land up in Hyalagadh, where the annual Jatra (carnival) is nothing short of a Do or Die game. The fun begins when the duo try to flee and instead of going the right way, land up in Tyalagadh, the "enemy" village. That's when the madness begins. The film has Bharat Jadhav & Vijay Chavan in a double role and both the talented actors have played their parts exceptionally well. The winner again, apart from the actors & the director, is the music! Talented duo Ajay-Atul made Kombdi & Maina (not the birds) a national Hit. Even non-Maharashtrians couldn't stop themselves from shaking. Don't miss MNS chief Raj Thackeray's voice over in the beginning, where he narrates the story of the two enemy villages. Enjoy this film with your family & you will certainly end up rolling on the floor laughing.
Shwaas
Starring Arun Nalawade, Ashwin Chitale, Sandeep Kulkarni
This film made the Marathi film industry proud by becoming India's official entry to the Oscars. Need I say more? It also bagged the National Award for Best Film in 2004, 50 years after the Marathi film Shyamchi Aai won the award. Made at a modest budget of 30 lakh rupees, this film made people stand up & notice the incredible potential and talent of the Marathi film industry. Shwaas made it big without any songs, heroes or heroines. The storyline is based on a real story set in Pune. The main protagonist of the film, Parshuram (Ashwin Chitale) is a little kid who is diagnosed with Retinal Cancer. It traces the journey of Parshuram & his grandfather (Arun Nalawade) who cannot come to terms with the fact that his grandson has to go through a surgery and may not be able to see the world ever again. The film earned a lot of accolades and certainly deserved all the attention that it got. Definitely a must watch for one and all.
Balgandharva
Starring: Subodh Bhave, Kishore Kadam, Avinash Narkar, Vibhavri Deshpande
Directed by - Ravi Jadhav
A film that brought one of my favorite, versatile Marathi actors, Subodh Bhave, and director Ravi Jadhav together. Balgandharva tells the story of Narayanrao Shripad Rajhans aka the legendary artist Balgandharva, one of the greatest singers and stage actors of his time. He was famous for his roles as female characters in Marathi plays. He got the name “Balgandharva” from the famous freedom fighter Lokmanya Tilak. The film shows the rise and fall of this legend, his relationship with his mother, his wife, his co-actors and other women. It celebrates his life in the most amazing way. But what adds more charm to this amazing journey are the performances. Each & every actor has added life to their respective characters. Be it Kishore Kadam, Avinash Narkar, Vibhavri Deshpande; everyone has done justice to their roles. The soulful music by Kaushal Inamdar is just what a film like this needed. My personal favorites include "Chinmaya Sakal Hridaya" and "Parvardigar". Cinematography by Mahesh Limaye is outstanding! Costumes by Neeta Lulla are beautiful and I must make a mention of the choice of colors and fabric. Make up artist Vikram Gaikwad is a magician, as he spells magic with his incredible work. The producer & art director Nitin Chandrakant Desai (remember his brilliants sets in Devdas, Black?) gets all the brownie point. Right from the lavish expenditure, amazing sets to getting a good team together, he has done it all.The film is a real treat for cinema lovers and full marks to Ravi Jadhav for his work as the director. Finally, reserved the best for the end. As Balgandharva, Subodh Bhave made me cry, smile, cheer and clap for his wonderful performance. He had the grace, the ada, charm & everything that an actor needs to portray the role of Balgandharva. Subodh has proved that he is definitely one of the finest actors in the Indian Film Industry today. This film has definitely made it to my 'All Time Favorite Films' list. Thumbs up!!
So, that's all in Part 1. The second part will be out very soon!!

Summer with some 'Neon' love
I love posting random stuff! Today is one such day where I'm staring at the wall with absolutely nothing except my upcoming exams in mind. So instead of falling sick with all those books next to me, I decided to do a post on things I'm obsessed with off late.
By now, my love for the NYX soft matte lip creme is something that most of you already know! I've always hated matte lipsticks to the core. But I've fallen in love with this range by NYX. So much that I ended up ordering another shade, this time a lighter hue of Pink! The shade number was mentioned in one of my earlier posts Here.
I decided to wear the matte creme in shade 'Milan' today and it looks lovely. Here goes another product in my 'Favourite Makeup Purse'.
Sometimes 'Mood swing' shopping can do wonders! It gave me a chance to pick up some great items including one of my new favourites - Kitten heels in Brown from Tresmode! And guess what, they had just one last piece of this little beauty in my size.
It looks adorable, especially with most of my winter wear. Alas! Its summer time in Mumbai. But I'm gonna make the most of it by pairing it with my favourite dresses and shorts.
| Paired it up with my favourite electric blue leggings |
With the weather in Mumbai being mean, its time to bring out that Tangerine dress, Hot pink skirt and Electric blue shorts. Yes! Its the 'Neon and Pastel' colours season. Its that time of the year where I get a chance to wear all my favourite colours including Pale pink, Lime green, Hot pink, Orange and more. A little bit of colour? Naaaa! I'd say 'A LOT' of colour wont hurt anyone this season.
If i really like something, i end up loving it way too much. A couple of things in different 'Neon' colours have caught my attention and I'm totally in love with them.
Let's hope my luck helps me buy those items one by one.

MakeUp Post - NYX items
So the other I decided to splurge on some items at the New Beauty Centre (Bandra, Mumbai). Had a long list of 'Must Buy'items, but I had to be sweet to my wallet as well. And anyway, I splurge on such times occasionally (Although NYX tempts me to keep buying). Apart from the usual self help items, I got some stuff from the NYX counter (My new, crazy stop). Here's a sneak peek -
1. NYX advanced salon formula nail polish - Pastel Coral NPS229
Tried on different colors before I zeroed in on this one. It was tough! But Pastel Coral won as its perfect for Summers. Tried it the moment I reached home and trust me, its superb. Lasted for almost 14 days without chipping off. I'm definitely gonna stock up on some more NYX nail polishes. Its a bit heavy on the pocket (Rs 280), but it sure is a good investment!
2. NYX soft matte lip cream - Addis Ababa
Its SO pink! Its SO me!!! The moment I saw this, I made up my mind that I MUST buy this. Its a soft matte lip cream that gives you a velvety, soft look without drying your lips (Trust me, I've had issues with all those old matte lipsticks). It is well saturated and opaque. The colour looks like a candy mark on your lips! It lasted for around 2 1/2 hours after application and continued to look nice with a small dab of lip balm. I cant wait to get my hands on more colours from this range. How much does it cost you may ask? Well, This little beauty costed me 600rs. And yes, it matches my laptop too :)
3. NYX Jumbo eyeliner Hot Pink 621
This was picked up to complete my 'Pink Makeup Kit'. Its so girly and cute! The best part, it doubles up as a eyeshadow as well (Simple! Apply and smudge). Just one simple line and done, You will end up looking like a barbie doll straight out of the Swan Lake series. But please, avoid pairing it up with the addis abiba lip matte cream. Too much pink looks awful! This one costed 400rs.
4. NYX round lipstick LSS 507
I've been waiting to wear this one. The right time is still not here, but its just perfect for summer. The orange tinge with a litte bit of shimmer makes it perfect for both day and night wear. Its a shimmery, creamy bright apricot orange. The best part is that other brand sell products similar to this with lesser options to choose from for 500-700rs. This one is a good quality product and lasted for around 4 hours when I first used it. And its available for just 320rs. Thats a steal and I'm SO going back to pick up some more shades.
So thats it! These were my four BIG buys from the last shopping trip to NBC. Next up is my BIG birthday month and I just might end up buying some more stuff.
Do keep an eye out for my next post! :)

New Buy - Open toe strappy wedges in Tan from Charles and Keith
Decided to splurge on a pair of wedges with low heels and checked in at Charles and Keith, one of my favourite shoe shopping haunt in Mumbai.
Fell in love with this beautiful, simple pair of Tan strappy wedges. Luckily, they had my size in stock. I loved it and decided to buy this beauty without a second thought!

Review | ELF Super Glossy Lip shine
So my sis from Bangkok gifted this huge packet with 5 glossy lip shines. Different colors and luckily, 5 colors that ended up looking good on me. Its the ELF ( Eyes Lips Face) Super glossy lip shine. ELF is a NY based brand, founded in the year 2004. Most of the colors I got in the pack were opaque.
These lip glosses do last long. The consistency of this gloss is good and luckily, they dont bleed in this Hot and humid climate. It has a sweet, fruity scent which I really like. The only problem is that its slightly sticky, just like some other products available in the market (Yes! Even Clarins colour quench lip balm didnt pass this test). But apparently its much cheaper than the other products.
Three colours, Groovy grape, Pink Lemonade and Los angeles are just perfect for the Mumbai climate during the days (Summer Time). If you are planning to team up a colourful pair of shorts with a pastel coloured top, this gloss will look perfect on your lips.
The other two colours, Juiced berry and Plumtastic are slightly dark and ofcourse, shimmery like the other 3. They are perfect for your parties and dinner with friends.
Although I got these little beauties as a gift, I got to know their prices and trust me, This one is a good buy at around $1-2 each.
Do give it a try and let me know your experience :)
Neon Lipsticks - Spring Summer 2012
These pop hued tones look great! I'm a big fan already (So much, that I ordered some lipsticks in fuschia and orange and they look lovely). They are totally in vogue this season. Bring out those lipsticks, lipcreme's and lipglosses in fuschia, orange, purple and their palettes.
Fendi, Diane von Furstenberg etc showed off this look on their runway in the end of 2011 (Spring Summer collection 2012).

Shower Gel
Review - Lush 'Flying Fox' Shower Gel
The other day, my brother decided to go shopping and ended up buying a small bottle of shower gel for me to try. Well, Its Lush! Even the apparent small bottle costs nothing less than 600-700rs (for 100ml). I prefer sticking to one brand when it comes to soaps or shower gel (And Pears is my favourite as it suits my skin type). But OH MY GOD, Thank goodness I got to know that a certain shower gel called 'Lush Flying Fox' exists. Why? Because it smells heavenly. Just what you need to use with a Hot water bath after a long, tiring day out.
The fragrance of this shower gel lifts up your spirits and has a calming effect as well. The fragrance is divine and it sure lingers for a while. The aroma of jasmine in this shower gel is not like your typical oil fragrance. It's more towards the sophisticated side and does not completely fall under the floral category as it has some honey too. I just love how the delightful fragrance of this shower gel spreads in the entire bathroom when I'm taking a bath. The 100 gms bottle is the smallest size available for Rs600. It will easily last for 2 months (If used daily) since you only need a 2-3 drops at a time. The use of 4 different kinds of Honey (according to the list of ingredients) does not make it sticky. In fact, the shower gel leaves your skin feeling very soft.
The best part about Lush products is that its 100% vegetarian and neither the product nor any of its ingredients are tested on animals. Also, some of the ingredients on this list are said to control PMS (Good news girls *wink*). So on a Terrible stress filled day, make sure you have a bottle of this shower gel handy. A hot water bath with this divine shower gel is all you need to shoo that stress away. The fragrance of this product is enough to calm things down.
So go visit your nearest Lush store and pick up a bottle of the 'Flying Fox' shower gel. I'll continue to use 'Pears' as my daily use shower gel. But 'Flying Fox' as definitely made it on my 'Once a week De-Stress products' list. It's gives the experience of a luxurious bath.
PS: I dont know much about its 'sex appeal' claims! But I think the fragrance is strong enough for heads to turn your way :)
Pros: Leaves you feeling calm and soothes your mind
Rich, Calming fragrance
Strong fragrance that stays on
100% vegetarian
Cons: Less lather because of which you end up using the product more
Conclusion: If you do think Rs 600 is good enough for a 100ml shower gel, Then buy this without a second thought!
Review - UrbanTouch.com
So I decided to try shopping for make up products online and happened to check out urbantouch.com, an online shopping site based in India which sells makeup and skincare products amongst others. I dont really like buying items using a credit card and hence, COD (cash on delivery) is one of the most important feature I look out for. Luckily, Urban touch does offer COD.
My parcel arrived today and Boy, I'm impressed. It was delivered in less than a week.
I ordered two NYX products

Wonderful vision of Saibaba
As I finished reading the main chapters of Sai satcharitra yesterday, baba blessed me with this wonderful vision to prove that he is with me forever. I saw myself taking darshana in the shri saibaba samadhi mandir. There I saw baba's murti adorned and decked with around 5-6 gold necklaces and the temple was empty! The priest then asked me to perform a puja in the Gurusthan with some other priests and offer 251 belpatra leaves along with milk on the Pindi (which is inside the gurusthan temple).
I performed the puja after which, my parents and I proceeded towards the Dwarkamai temple where the priest gave us food from the Hodge - Podge (which was a custom followed until recently, where naivedya brought by all bhaktas was mixed & distributed after the aarti) and made us sit in two rows in front of the dhuni and baba's picture.
I woke up to this dream to see that the time was 10 am. I couldn't believe all that I saw in my dream. My hair stood at end and I looked at baba's picture which is right next to my bed and slowly whispered, "Om sai ram. Thank you for this heartwarming vision! Baba, I LOVE YOU."
BOW TO SHRI SAI, PEACE BE TO ALL
