Varun Dhawan - Anushka Sharma turn ambassadors for Skill India
Actors Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma, through their much awaited film ‘Sui Dhaaga - Made in India’, are promoting Indian entrepreneurs and skilled workforces. Especially homegrown artisans, craftspeople and weavers who have been making the country proud across the globe. In their upcoming film which focuses on entrepreneurship, Dhawan plays a tailor named Mauji, while Sharma will be seen as his wife and embroiderer Mamta. Innocent yet ambitious, the film showcases their journey towards making a name for themselves.
What's interesting is that the Sui Dhaaga pair have been signed on to promote and endorse the Skill India Mission, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. As the film highlights the untapped potential of India’s talented craftsmen and skilled workers at the grass root level and the challenges, issues faced by them, both Varun and Anushka have partnered with Skill India. The duo will dedicate time to promote India’s skilled talent and their fine work, by engaging with artists from different parts of the country.
Speaking about this association, Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas and Minister of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, stated, “Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma, through this unique film Sui Dhaaga - Made in India, are bringing to focus the incredible skills and talent of our homegrown artisan and craftsmen community. It is really heartening to see actors like them doing a film that has such a significant social message. India is one of the youngest countries in the world; and it is a matter of great pride for us to see such dedicated and passionate skilled youth with entrepreneurial skills in our country who are bringing name and fame to the nation with their work.”
“I wish this endorsement by both actors encourages and influences the youth to take up skill training and earn a better livelihood for themselves and help us in creating the New India envisioned by Honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi,” he further added.
Led by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), Skill India aims to standardise vocational training — both new-age and traditional skills —, helps in creation of latest infrastructure, ensures industry partnerships to extend technology support to make the youth more employable and assists in creating opportunities of employment for the youth of our country. This has led to more than 1 crore youth joining the Skill India Mission every year and transforming their lives through better livelihood.
Speaking about the association, Dhawan said, “Prime Minister Modi has displayed incredible vision and genuine foresight in aiming to organise, skill, train and give financial support and backing to our craftsmen, artisans and similar workmen. We are proud to be promoting this campaign that we feel extremely close to, just like our movie Sui Dhaaga that celebrates self-reliance and entrepreneurship’’
Adds Sharma, “Skill India Campaign reflects the government’s determination to include and support the talented skilled force of the country. While making Sui Dhaaga, we came across so many stories of talented, skilled crafts people and artisans who don’t get a fair chance to showcase their talents.”

Versatile actors don't leave any stone unturned to get the nuances of their character right in a film. Varun Dhawan hasn't shied away from experimenting with his looks and personality while essaying a character - be it the bindass Raja in Judwaa 2 or demure Dan in October. In his next, titled Sui Dhaaga - Made in India, the actor will be seen playing the role of an innocent local tailor from the heartland of India, named Mauji. Ever since the first look of this film was released, Varun's transformation into a local simpleton was widely appreciated. The simplicity and authenticity of his character (from whatever one could see in the trailer) and the overall look has become a talking point among the audience and his fans.
So, we looked out for the inspiration behind this look. Costume designer Darshan Jalan, who has worked on Dhawan's look in the film, revealed the big secret behind his inspiration. No one knows that the tailor overseeing Dhawan’s prep and training for the film, Noor, is the real inspiration behind Mauji’s look!
Adds Jalan, “Mauji is from the lower middle class income strata. He is a simple person who works in the city as a help/peon at a sewing machine store. Regular people on the streets became an inspiration for us, like the Ittar perfume guy from the streets of Haridwar and particularly Noor, our in-house tailor who was also training Varun to perfect his art of stitching and tailoring." From a styling point of view, Jalan said that they ensured Varun’s look had nuances that only a tailor would come up with. He quips, "There are certain elements, such as zipper on the side of the pants, so that he could reduce the size of the flare to keep it from getting caught while cycling. Zipper on the trouser hem, so that the ends don't tear. I truly believe that these intricate details makes the audience see something new and adds to the authenticity of the character from a small town in India.”
Talking about his inspiration for the character, Dhawan adds, “Noor has been integral to Sui Dhaaga. He was my trainer for 3 months. He laid the foundation stone to my transformation for becoming Mauji. I’m indebted to him for teaching me the art of sui-dhaaga and making me a believable tailor on screen. And, I heard that his sense of dressing inspired my look in the film also." The actor further adds that everything in this film is about authenticity, and being real. "That’s what is making audiences love our trailer. I’m happy that my look has been well received and the credit goes to Darshan and obviously my teacher - Noor, who has left his impression over my character,” said Dhawan.
Yash Raj Films' Sui Dhaaga - Made in India, highlights the journey of finding love and respect through self-reliance, VD is paired opposite Anushka Sharma, who plays an embroiderer in the film. The duo have been paired together for the first time, and if the reactions are anything to go by, the audience is clearly loving their sweet chemistry (anyone else hooked on to Chaav Laga already?)
The film also marks the collaboration of National Award winning producer - director combo Maneesh Sharma and Sharat Katariya, after Dum Laga Ke Haisha, which earned fine accolades from all corners. The makers aim to promote the film as a special salute to the inherent entrepreneurial spirit of local artisans and Indian youth.

The much awaited Mumbai reception hosted by newly wed couple - Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma, finally unfolded last night. After a fairy tale wedding in Italy and a high profile Delhi reception, the couple invited friends and members of the film fraternity for a special evening, organised at The St Regis (Lower Parel). Apart from the families and close friends, there were a host of renowned guests, ranging from Kohli's team mates from the Indian cricket team to Sharma's co-stars and friends from Bollywood. As usual, the paparazzi went berserk, as they snapped several a-listers walked the specially created red carpet and photo-op area. Among the key attendees were Sharma's debut film co-star Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan and family, M.S Dhoni and family, Ranbir Kapoor among others. Highlight of the evening included Khan dubbing a popular film dialogue for Kohli, and the couple's incredible dance on Punjabi numbers.
However, apart from the usual insider stories (which isn't our domain), what stood out were the outfits picked by the couple, as well as the attendees. Here's a round up of some top looks sported by Bollywood celebrities at the event.

Once again, the bride picked a Sabyasachi outfit for the event. According to the designer, Anushka wanted an old world glam look. The smokey grey lehanga was crafted with hand beaten thread, texture sequins and cut organza flowers on an embroidered tulle base. Renowned craftsmen from Lucknow rendered the dupatta, which was clinched on the wait with Sabyasachi's popular 'Bengal Tiger' belt. We loved how she opted for soft tousled waves and kept her make up minimal, with just lightly flushed cheeks, soft smokey eyes and a rose nude lipstick. The diamonds around her neck shone bright, as hand crafted necklace and pair of earrings (with rose cut diamonds, solitaires and briolettes) added a special touch to her glam look.
The groom went for a navy velvet bandhgala, a classic look by Raghavendra Rathore. White pants, brown shoes and a pink shirt completed his look for the dazzling do.

Harry made quite a stylish entry at Sejal's wedding reception (Sorry, but we couldn't help say this). King Khan picked a formal outfit for the event. A classy three piece black suit, with printed pocket square and floral lapel pin, completed his look.

The actress dazzled in a stunning pashmina and velvet saree in black and blue, with Tilla Kashmir Zari. The outfit had some beautiful intricate and unique artwork, and Sridevi looked every inch a diva. She chose to accessorise the look with a heavy gold necklace and a pair of earrings.
Priyanka Chopra
Priyanka Chopra made a quick entry at the reception, hours after delivering an inspirational speech at the Penguin Annual Lecture in Delhi. The global girl went all traditional and picked a Gold Banarasi Weave Saree, with a green blouse, both from her own collection. Temple style jewellery, bindi, soft waves and bold lips completed her look.
Ranbir Kapoor
RK kept it cool and classy in a formal outfit for the do. Sharma's Ae Dil Hai Mushkil co-star picked an elegant checkered Canali suit for the occasion. A matching Hugo Boss neck tie, with a pair of black formal shoes by O'Keeffe.
Katrina Kaif
Fresh from the success of 'Tiger Zinda Hai', where the actress earned accolades for her fierce avatar, Katrina made a stylish appearance with her sister - Isabelle, in tow. Her powder blue cascading trailer skirt and embellished crop top by designer Manish Malhotra was certainly one of our favourites. She kept it simple with minimal make up and soft tousled waves.

It's been a good year for the actor, and we couldn't help but notice the glow on his face. Varun walked the red carpet, looking dapper in a three piece navy blue suit and polka dotted pocket square. A pink necktie added the perfect pop of colour to his stylish outfit.

The feisty actress walked the red carpet like a 'Queen'. She picked an ivory gold Kanjeevaram saree from designer Sabyasachi's Vasanthalaxmi collection, along with a textured silk blouse. Classic uncut diamond, emerald and pearl jewellery crafted in 22k gold (all from the Sabyasachi jewellery collection), along with fresh flowers wrapped around a vintage bun, soft make up and juttis by NeedleDust added the perfect 'royal' touch to her overall look.

For someone who always makes a dapper entry, Sid is never the one to disappoint. The 'gentleman' Sidharth chose a classic royal blue bandhgala by designer Manish Malhotra, with ivory floral thread work on the sleeves and aged velvet mandarin collar, paired with classic black shoes by Dune London.

Rekha's traditional look is always hard to miss, and for the much talked about reception, she chose a gold and purple saree, paired with a pink blouse and golden potli bag. I Truly Believe That Fans Give You Stardom - Varun Dhawan | Exclusive Interview
With his boyish charm, extraordinary dance skills and fine performances, Varun Dhawan has become one of the biggest stars in the Indian film industry. Five years and eight films later, the actor has been one of the few successful artists to deliver back to back hits at the box office. In less than a decade, the actor has proved his mettle by experimenting with different genres and essaying memorable characters. His performances in films like Main Tera Hero, Badlapur and more recently, Badrinath ki Dulhania has earned him appreciation and millions of fans across the globe.
This time, Dhawan or VD, as he is popularly known, is back to doing what he enjoys the most - comedy. A remake of an iconic film and his father, the king of Bollywood comedies - David Dhawan, helming the project. Well, this can't get better. As Raja and Prem, VD is all set to win your heart with his crazy, fun antics in Judwaa 2, a remake of the iconic 1997 film starring Salman Khan. And if the trailer, promos and buzz around the film is anything to go by, the film is all set to rule the BO charts. We met Varun Dhawan for a quick chat, in between the crazy promotion schedule for the film. Despite the city tours and back to back promotional activities, the actor was cheerful and visibly excited. We heard that you are very stressed, especially now with the release around?It's my dad's film, so I am a little stressed. I want the audiences to watch the film and laugh. Paresh Rawal also told me recently, "Why are you youngsters so scared and stressed? Go out there and perform to your best."In fact, both Tapsee (Pannu) and Jacqueline (Fernandez), asking me to take things easy. So, I am finally trying to take thing easy and smiling a lot these days (smiles).
What do you have to say about your co-stars, Jacqueline and Taapsee? How was it working with them?
They are both very good. They are extremely positive and inspiring people. I feel, both my characters have come out better while performing with them. Jacqueline has done a lot of hits with big stars. She is experienced. Tapsee too has done South films and is known for her roles in Baby and Pink, which have won accolades. So, I know for a fact that both of them will be appreciated in this film.
Since you are playing a double role for the first time, how challenging was the process for you?
It was definitely tough. Though they are shown as identical twins in the film, I had to change my walk and modulate my voice for both the characters. One is born in Mumbai, while the other has grown up in London. So, I had to keep that and several other factors in mind when I was performing the two characters.
Do you feel that your dad, David Dhawan, brings out the best in you?
Well, I think so. My dad likes to take two takes. He loves monologues and songs, as he has worked with bigger actors. He used to give me lengthy lines and would then ask me to perform it in one take. He is experienced, and when an actor gets stuck somewhere, he knows how to handle it. He knows how to draw performances from actors. I also know what he likes. Now, we have become very good friends. We share a very honest relationship.
Do you have any special memories of visiting the sets of Judwaa?
I don't remember much. I was just ten years old, but I used to go on the sets with dad. However, I watched the film much later when I grew up. Everyone knows that the film is a hit and the songs are iconic.
You also got the original Judwaa, Salman Khan, for an appearance in the film. Did he give you any advice?
Salman sir said, don't spoil the song Tan tana tan and don't change the steps. So, we have retained the original hook steps in the song. He was kind enough to send a bag full of jeans for my character Raja, which he had worn in Judwaa. People will get to see all the jeans in this film. Salman's sister Arpita is my close friend, so we know each other's family since quite long.
Dad and I have become very good friends. We share a very honest relationship
Considering this is a remake of an iconic film, there would be obvious comparisons. Especially when it comes to your performance as Raja and Prem.
Of course. I am sure people are going to compare Judwaa 2 with the original film, but it would be unfair to compare me with Salman or any of the Khans or Akshay Kumar. They have been stars for the last 25 years, and that's why, they are known as superstars today. They have always been well connected with their fans through every medium, be it Radio, Cinema or social media. I truly believe that fans give you stardom. When my first film released, Salman sir had told me, "This has done well, but what about the future?" I think that's very true. First film is like a challenge, and after that, if I don't do what the audience wants to see me do, they will throw me out of the industry.
Varun, how important is a film's performance at the box office for you? What do the BO numbers mean to you?
I personally feel that box office collections are important to gauge a film. I remember that people would often talk about my father's success and box office collections of his films. Some even said that when they were not feeling well, they would watch papa's film and feel better. In a similar manner, I want to make the audiences happy and achieve that kind of stardom too.

A majority of your fan following includes youngsters, who dutifully look up to you. However, off late, there have been instances where these young kids take drastic steps like committing suicide for a game or get addicted to drugs. What would be your advice to them?
We are surrounded with such beautiful nature, but we don't enjoy that. We are always busy with our cell phones. According to me, the biggest stress-buster is music, so please listen to music. Talk to your parents, play some sports, go out and enjoy the nature. Also, please put your mobile off when you are sleeping. Also, try to do some Yoga and meditation. Look at the brighter side of life.
