No relationship exists without love - Alia Bhatt | Exclusive Interview

Tuesday, November 22, 2016
It has been a great year for the effervescent Alia Bhatt. While her films went on to become successful, the actress earned much praise for her performances and the wonderful transformation - from the metropolitan free spirit Tia in Kapoor & Sons to the rustic girl with dreams in Udta Punjab. With two successful films behind her, the actress is now gearing up for her next release - the much anticipated Dear Zindagi, helmed by Gauri Shinde. We have seen her hop-skip-jump to attend one promotional event after another and single handedly managing most tasks, to spread the word about her film. In between one such hectic day, we managed to catch up with Alia at a suburban hotel, in a very candid mood. The actress walked in looking pretty as ever, with minimal accessories and make up. She was oozing confidence and perhaps telling the world – what you see is what you get. Excerpts from our candid tete-a-tete with the actress:

Now that the film is 3 days away from release, how will you sum up your experience working in Dear Zindagi?
It was a very fresh and wonderful experience. Dear Zindagi is a unique film, as the idea and theme is very different from what we usually see nowadays. The entire experience is very dear to me.
Kaira – the character you are playing in Dear Zindagi, is also very different. Do you relate to her in your real life?
Well, Kaira is impulsive, while Alia is not. Having said that, I must admit that from all the characters I have played on screen till date, this was the closest character to my real life. Also, this film is meant for the youth in their twenties. They will relate a lot to it. Ditto their parents.
This is also your first film with Shahrukh Khan. What has been your biggest takeaway from this particular experience?
He has been in the industry for 25 years. But still, he is so humble. What I like most about him is the fact that he will go out of the way to make you comfortable. It's a rare thing for a superstar like him. And also he doesn't carry the burden of his stardom on the sets or even otherwise. He treats everyone equally. While shooting, we would talk about anything and everything. He would always make sure that we are comfortable. One common thing between me and him would be our thinking patterns. They match very well.

Can you tell us about your first meeting with him?
He always says that he never avoids my dad's phone calls. I remember my father’s friends wanted to meet him, so we all went to his house. I must have been around 11 years old. I was spellbound while looking at him, and my dad still has that picture of me with him. And when I started shooting for Dear Zindagi, dad actually sent me that picture.
Shah Rukh is known as the King of Romance. But he has not played a romantic role opposite you in this one. Would you like to play such a role opposite him?
There was no scope for romance in this film. But, I also believe that no relationship exists without love. We don’t share a romantic relation with everyone, but still, there is love. Although, if given a chance, I would want to be cast opposite him, provided the story is appropriate. The story should make sense, with an older man and a younger girl. Because obviously, we can’t play people of the same age.
Your next release, Badrinath ki Dulhania, how is that shaping up?
It is a desi, heartland romance. It's like that flavour of desi ghee. I feel Varun (Dhawan) is doing great in the comedy space and is growing. We are proud of each other and the way we are growing are artists. Recently, we have completed a schedule in Singapore for the film. It was great fun.
Recently, your father commented that you are more talented than your sister Pooja Bhatt. What do you have to say?
Pooja Bhatt is a great artist, and an amazing producer and director. I will never be able to do that.

Apart from earning accolades and praises for her performance as the gritty Bihari migrant in Udta Punjab, Alia Bhatt also upped the ante during the promotions with her chic looks. From summery fresh dresses to going the sporty chic way with canary yellow kicks, Alia made us fall in love with her choices. Plus, midway through the promotions, we saw her undergo a hair makeover, as she opted for shoulder length hair, which is perfect for summer. We take a look some of our favourite looks from the recently concluded Udta Punjab promotions.
1. Udta Punjab Song Launch
For her first solo song launch event for the film, where she was seen with director Abhishek Chaubey, Alia chose a breezy Topshop number. Styled by Ami Patel, we loved how Alia kept it simple with minimal make up, with just a pink tint on her lips. Also, we love how she paired the outfit with white ankle strap heels.
2. Udta Punjab Press Meet
Alia stepped out in a gorgeous Victoria Scandale outfit at a press meet to address a controversy surrounding the film. Flushed cheeks, bold lips and an elegant pair of gold ankle strap heels completed this chic look.
3. Udta Punjab Interviews
On a long day filled with interviews, Alia likes to keep it casual. She opted for a layered look in gingham, with this outfit by designed Aniket Satam. Once again, the actress kept it minimal in the make up department, with just tinted lips and soft wavy hair. Bershka kicks completed her simple yet super stylish look.
4. Udta Punjab Celebrity Screening
For the celebrity screening of Udta Punjab at a suburban private screening theatre, Alia looked super cute in Gabriela Alexandrova Paris co-ords. Don't miss those super cool canary yellow kicks by Adidas, that added a touch of quirk to the look. Definitely, one of our favourites!
5. Udta Punjab Success Party
Alia certainly prefers comfort over over-the-top, super glamorous outfits. For the success party, she chose a simple Urban Outfitters number. Bold red lips and a sleek tied up hair do added some drama. And of course, don't miss those checkered sneakers.
6. Udta Punjab Post Release Television Interviews
Alia added some colourful to an otherwise dull and rainy day earlier this week, as she gave media bytes and television interviews at a suburban studio. The Edeline Lee outfit paired with stunning studded kicks definitely brightened up our day. We love how hairstylist Ayesha Devitre has given the actress a soft scrunchy look. Must say, the girl got her sneaker game on point in almost every look during the film promoting!

Udta Punjab | Film Review
It won't be wrong to say that the makers of Udta Punjab went through a roller coaster of a journey, before their labour of love could release in theatres. Right from finding it difficult to find someone to back the film to getting stuck in a CBFC controversy and finally, emerging victorious just two days away from the film's release. Despite all the obstacles that the team successful passed, Udta Punjab finally hit the screens today and we have enough reasons to call it a must watch.
Director Abhishek Chaubey's Udta Punjab is dark, raw and edgy drama, which follows the journey of four individuals, whose lives get embroiled in the circle of drugs and addiction in different ways. The film opens with a sequence that well explains the way this highly dangerous substance is illegally imported into the country from across the border. We are then introduced to all the main characters who build the story - Tommy Singh (Shahid Kapoor as a loud and wacky pop star, whose live revolves around music, parties and drugs), Bihari Migrant aka Pagaliya / Mary Jane (Alia Bhatt as a state level hockey champion from Bihar, whose life takes the turn for worse as she is brought to Punjab as a labourer), Sartaj Singh (Diljit Dosanjh as the head strong cop) and Dr Preet Sahani (Kareena Kapoor Khan as a doctor based in Punjab, who also runs a rehabilitation clinic for drug addicts). Apart from the lead cast, there are other important characters played by some fine actors who further make the ensemble cast stronger.
Each character's journey begins on one note and ends on a completely different note. It is this very journey that sets the premise of this film. Despite being high on life and considering himself as the king of the world, Tommy Singh is nothing but a lost soul who has no idea where life is taking him. He depends on drugs to help him get a kick and become the 'Gabru', that he is famously known as. Bhatt's bihari migrant is a dreamer, whose only wish is to live a good life. But, it is during the quest to fulfil this very dream that lands her in deep trouble and changes her life forever. Sartaj Singh is one of the many corrupt cops in the area, who does not care about the ongoings in Punjab, until trouble lands at his doorstep and changes his view of the situation in the state forever. Dr Preet Sahani is a warm and caring doctor, whose only mission is to wipe out this addiction, which has paralysed the youth of her state. But, little does she know that life can unpredictable.
Udta Punjab leaves you feeling shocked, surprised and emotional in many ways. Certain sequences in the first half are extremely dark and can, in fact, leave you with goosebumps. As we are introduced to the characters, we also realise how vulnerable they are, irrespective of their stature in the society. This is not your usual candy floss cinema. This is an honest attempt that aims to highlight the problems that plague the state, through the journey of it's four main protagonists and a few other important characters. The treatment meted out to the film is perfect. Director Abhishek Chaubey has used some wonderful techniques to describe the psychological state of every character. The research is commendable and quite eye opening as well. Chaubey keeps the film crisp and avoids unwanted cliches that you may see in any other drug drama. There are no high intensity chases and maar-dhaad here. The scenes that unfold are real and raw. The background score is simply brilliant and we like how the songs are wonderfully woven into the narrative, not making it look abrupt or unwanted. The music composed by Amit Trivedi is very good, and the songs do stay in your mind, even hours after leaving the cinema hall (though I did miss Vadiyaan, which happens to be my favourite song from the film). The dialogues are good, and despite being filled with choicest of expletives, it does not sound gross or out of place. Let's admit it, that's how a lot of people talk. So, no point running away from reality and behaving like we haven't heard people use an abuse each in every sentence. Majority of the film is in the Punjabi and Bihari dialect, hence subtitles have been provided.
What's amazing about this film is the way Chaubey has allowed all four protagonists to lead the way. This is not a one hero film. Udta Punjab belongs to the entire cast, who help shape the film with their well researched characters. Alia is as much the hero of this film as Shahid, Diljit or Kareena. Shahid steps in a completely different world as the crazy rockstar Tommy Singh. He gets the nuances of a substance addict right and puts up a controlled act. It won't be wrong to say that this shall add up to his list of best performances so far. Despite all the wrongdoings, you don't hate Tommy, but tend to sympathise and feel for the character. This is the most complex characters of them all and Shahid does complete justice to it. He portrays a lot of his emotions through the eyes and does an excellent job of essaying this complex role. Alia performs well as the bihari migrant. Although she takes time to get into her character and feel comfortable with the dialect, she does well, especially in the second half. You feel for her helplessness and support her for being a rebel. Diljit makes an impressive debut in the Hindi film industry. His portrayal of Sartaj Singh is not your usual "I am a cop and can beat up 100s" kind of machoism. Diljit essays Sartaj in the most honest and mature manner. He emotes very well, which is certainly his biggest advantage. We would certainly love to see more of him in Bollywood. Kareena looks gorgeous as the calm and composed Preet, who is gritty and determined. While the character doesn't give her much scope to experiment, she puts up a fine performance and leaves an impact. The ensemble cast, especially the actor who plays Balli and one of our favourites - Satish Kaushik are brilliant.
Overall, Udta Punjab is an honest and brilliantly packaged attempt. The kind of cinema that highlights an important issue without being too preachy. The film forces you to think about the often ignored issues, but does not let your mind wander. Instead, you want to stay glued on, anticipating the next move or scene. Definitely, one of the best films to come out in recent times. The artists deserve accolades for their hard work and honest performances. The film proves that no matter what the budget, all you need is a good cast, a well researched plot and serious faith in your project. A must watch!

I have reached a point where I feel secured as an actor | Shahid Kapoor - Exclusive Interview
Shahid Kapoor's evolution as an actor has been truly awe-inspiring. The kind that can inspire generations of budding actors to never give up in tumultuous times and believe in yourself, especially when you possess exceptional talent. During his 13 year long career in the Hindi film industry, Shahid has indeed grown from a chocolate boy, the loveable guy next door, to a man who can easily slip into a variety of different characters, no matter how dark or mentally taxing. Like a chameleon, he does a powerful character like Haider Meer and in less than a year, gets into the suave and sassy mode for Jagjinder Joginder in Shaandaar. But, the transformation for Udta Punjab is what you would call a never before seen or tried attempt. With the drug drama, which is all set to release tomorrow, Shahid steps into the shoes of a substance addict, who is a loud, wacky and completely over-the-top rockstar - an image that is a far cry from his own personality. But, the risk taker in him encouraged the actor to push himself beyond limits and take up the challenge, like he has done in the past. And with the looks of it, we are sure he will triumph once again.
We meet the actor on a pleasant afternoon at a super busy office, where anxious reporters are ready with their long list of questions. It's natural. Apart from having two big drama ventures waiting in the wings, the actor is all set for a new chapter in his life. He will be turning a father soon and like any other first time Dad, the glow on Shahid's face cannot be missed (Who said only mommy glow could exist?) He looks happy, content and super excited (and may he continue to be that way). One could see a sense of bliss and happiness in his eyes, which couldn't be ignored throughout our conversation. Marriage has certainly changed the actor in many ways than one, but this one is certainly for good. After a quick exchange of greetings, the actor grabs a cuppa and settles down for a wonderful chat, incomplete without his amazing wit, of course. Excerpts from the insightful conversation:

What went into the making of Tommy Singh? Beyond the multiple cups of coffee that you took to get a high, of course.
Oh god! This coffee thing became such a simple solution, no? But, I wish it was as simple as just that. Playing Tommy Singh was both a scary and challenging process. I could still draw parallels for the part where Tommy is a superstar, but essaying the part of a substance addict was very difficult. But, the character itself was so exciting, that I had to take it up as a challenge, especially since I don't drink alcohol. Plus, I have never ever been high in my entire life, be it on alcohol or any other substance. So, understanding the state of mind of someone in that zone was difficult. In fact, I told Abhishek (Chaubey) that in my opinion, you might have come to the right actor, but have you come to the right person? (laughs) He was very sure about what he wanted and ensured that he would discuss everything that the role required.
How was the look for Tommy Singh, which has now become a huge rage, conceptualised?
What about the physical transformation, that everyone can't stop talking about?
When I heard the script, I realised that the character was very in-your-face, and I wanted to ensure that I am able to make people feel that when they see the film. So, we needed to add a physicality to the character, which should look shocking. If you see someone like Tommy Singh walking on the road, you would keep staring and go, "Who is that guy?" That's the kind of look that we wanted to achieve. So, we did everything that we could to achieve it, right from 14 tattoos to changing the hair do. For three months before the film, I was working out three hours a day and not eating much. My diet would only consist of little brown rice, very little dal and yoghurt, and just some salad. That's what I ate three times a day, for three months. That's it! This is because I had very little time to achieve the look that I wanted to get for this character. Honestly, three months is very little for where I was and where I needed to be.

Abhishek had shot with Kareena and Diljit for a month already. After which, he came back and shot with Alia and me. While he was away, I got this entire look together, with tattoos, long hair and blue - green streaks. So, I took a few pictures and emailed it to him. His only response was - “When I get back, we shall discuss this.” I honestly don’t think he expected us to interpret it in such a way. But when he came back, he was honestly very happy about the look.

Were there any pre-shoot workshops for Udta Punjab?
No, but I saw a lot of documentaries. Also, there were discussions with Abhishek. Since he had researched the film for over a year, he understood what it is to be on substance and was able to give me a lot of information. Plus, I guess we all have been to enough parties to know what a substance addict looks like (laughs). I have seen a few here and there. So, after all this, I plunged into it to achieve him. If a role like this comes my way, there is no way I am gonna let is go.What about the physical transformation, that everyone can't stop talking about?

What was the biggest challenge of essaying a character like Tommy Singh?
The fact that he is obnoxious, aggressive, abusive, badly behaved, but at the same time, people need to fall in love with him in five minutes. That's what Abhishek told me, just one day before my schedule, while shooting with Kareena (Kapoor Khan) and Diljit (Dosanjh). Abhishek was just sitting out there, drunk and totally stressed out about making this film, and was wearing shades inside a room (laughs). He went, "Tommy is obnoxious, crazy blah blah. But, if people don't love him in five minutes, this film is screwed (mimicking Abhishek). Live with that!" He said that, got up, caught his flight and just left me thinking.
Go on...
You know, the kind of energy that one needs to play that character is insane. But thankfully, after seeing people's response to the promo, I guess we have managed all of that. You know, there are certain people who are so unique, that you find them entertaining. You don't feel bad about what they are doing, because their antics are just entertaining. Tommy Singh is just that, an exhibition. Whatever he feels, he just puts it out there. He is not manipulative, evil or contriving, but actually just a lost kid. He is a very talented musician, who wrote lyrics about something that he thought was cool and became a really big star. But ultimately, he has forgotten who he was and lost everything to his addiction. The journey shows how a guy, who thinks he is the king of this world, is actually nothing and is trying to find himself. I hope people will be able to see through that and understand Tommy's state of mind. He is just like a kid. That's why, we tried to find a way to interpret his character like that. Otherwise on paper, you will never feel for that guy!
Music of this film plays an important role, especially since Tommy is a rockstar. Were some of the songs designed keeping in mind his wackiness?

Music of this film plays an important role, especially since Tommy is a rockstar. Were some of the songs designed keeping in mind his wackiness?
Making the music and creating Tommy Singh was a parallel process. Tommy expresses himself through his music. So, Amit and I interacted to discuss what should be the feel, energy and vibe of the musIc. I am very happy with the way it has shaped up. I think it sounds great.
Haider Meer left you feeling psychologically exhausted, which is why you followed up with a lighter film like Shaandaar. Did you undergo something similar with Tommy?
Oh yes! It was physically exhausting. Psychologically, I just wanted to feel normal. Halfway through the film I fell ill. There was no infection or illness, but I just so depleted and tired. The character was very contradictory. Superstars, Pop stars have a larger than life image. However, substance addicts tend to look very depleted and underfed. For Tommy, I needed both in one guy. So, that's why there was no food and lots of training. I would feel tired but at the same time, the kind of a guy you would want to look up to on a stage. I would honestly love to do a fun, easy-breezy film now. It's important, because I have done films like Haider, Udta Punjab and Rangoon almost back to back.
Would you have played Tommy Singh a little differently, had it come to you a few years back?
I don't know. It was only in the last 3 - 4 years that I think I have developed the confidence to try different roles, and maybe people are seeing that in the choices I am making, therefore roles like these are coming to me. Also, I wasn't very good with film selections that time. Maybe a few years back, nobody would have approached me to play a Tommy Singh.
Halfway through the film I fell ill. There was no infection or illness, but I just so depleted and tired.
But in the past, you had a Jab We Met and Kaminey, where both your characters were completely opposite and challenging.
I fell upon Jab We Met and got lucky to work with Imtiaz Ali, who had a brilliant script with him. But, I do think I had the basic intelligence to not let that film go, despite the fact that he was a new film maker. And I was damn lucky that Vishal Bharadwaj thought of me as Charlie and Guddu in Kaminey, which even I didn't see myself as. I think, those projects made me wake up and feel like - Oh shit! This is nice. Why didn't I do projects like these before?
Have you at any point in your career feared failure?
Actually, in the last 3 - 4 years of my career, I have reached a point where I feel secured as an actor and I enjoy challenges. Maybe, that comes after 10 years of work. Or maybe, because I have seen a mix of both success and failure. So, when you have seen both sides, there is no fear. Fear creeps in when you have not seen failure, or when you don't know the dark side. I have been to the dark side and back, so there is no room for any fear.
Doing films like Udta Punjab and Rangoon back to back is not easy for an actor. Do you think you are more open to taking that kind of a risk today?
The only question that one needs to ask himself is - just because one is not making safe choices consecutively, are these bad choices? Is this a film that I would want to go into, regardless of any kind of analysis? Sometimes, you just need to simplify things for yourself and leave the rest to destiny. Maybe there is a reason why these films are coming my way, I don't know. I just kept things simple. I felt like I wanted to do these films, because I liked the character and I did it. I didn't go far thinking which film comes out first or second. Just for that reason, to say no to a film that excites me, would be a stupid decision. Also, who likes doing the same thing everyday? What is there to like in a stereotype? If you eat Dal Chawal everyday, would you be happy? So as an actor, you need to try different things. It’s a need.
Fear creeps in when you have not seen failure, or when you don't know the dark side. I have been to the dark side and back, so there is no room for any fear.

Any character in your filmography that you could relate to?
I think there is a shade of me in all of them. But, none of them are me for sure.
What was your state of mind on the last day of Udta Punjab like?
I was just so happy. Just wanted to get on to that flight and take a breather. In fact, I even posted a picture on Instagram with a fist pump while traveling back, when we wrapped the film. It felt like - mission accomplished, bas hogaya. But somehow, I felt that way on the last day of all these three films - Haider, Udta Punjab and Rangoon. It was just so tiring and exhausting, that I just wanted it to finish. You know sometimes, halfway through the film, you tend to go - Yaar! Maine khamakha
panga toh nahin liya? Bas, ghar jaake normal khaana khaate hain aur normal cheezein karte hain (laughs).
You surprised everyone with the announcement of becoming a father during the Udta Punjab trailer launch. How has life changed ever since?
This is a very exciting phase of my life. You know, I am following accounts on Instagram and have been downloading applications to know all about this exciting new phase. Let’s just say, I am in a very happy and secure space.
So, we see you directly in 2017 with Rangoon. Any projects that you have taken up or finalised in between? I remember you telling me about AK vs SK last time.
AK vs SK is not happening and I am not doing that film. Actually, I am unemployed after Rangoon. Let's see what happens next (smiles).

Getting Trippy With It | Udta Punjab Music Review
Every time I attend a trailer launch, I am bound to judge the music of that film, before I can judge its prospects at the box office. At most events, the signature background score or the main track is continuously played, to ensure that it stays with you several hours after the event. Something similar happened to me during the Udta Punjab trailer launch last month, as I just couldn't take the signature tune out of my head. I kept humming, tapping my feet and later, discussing my pre-release excitement for the film's music on Snapchat. Needless to say, composer Amit Trivedi's work has matched up to all my expectations from the album, that gives you some serious musical 'high'.
The seven track album starts off with Chitta Ve, which is brilliantly sung by Babu Habbi, Shahid Mallya and Bhanu Prtap. This high octane song is enough to make you get up and shake a leg. Hear the lyrics closely, and you are sure to realise that it goes much beyond simply being just another song. Chitta Ve is a harsh reality - that of a drug user's state of mind and how the substance has swamped the state of Punjab, especially the youth. Kudos to lyricist Shellee for a well penned track. Chitta Ve is edgy and highly addictive, making it one of our favourite songs from the album.
The upbeat and easygoing Da da dasse comes next. Again, one can't enough of the signature tune here. Kanika Kapoor's vocals, coupled with Babu Habbi's rapping and Trivedi's perfect composition make this one a well arranged song. The kind of a track that you would love to hear while sitting all alone and pondering over something (maybe?)
The soft and melodious Ikk Kudi comes next, with Shahid Mallya taking over as the solo vocalist. Although the song is well sung, for us, it is the reprise version by Diljit Dosanjh (who also makes his debut in Bollywood with this film) that wins. Dosanjh' version is an excellent rendition; a breezy composition which sounds more soulful and emotional than the original one.
Ikk Kudi is followed by another energetic number. This time, we've got Amit Trivedi crooning Ud-daa Punjab with Vishal Dadlani. This one's got the dhol and tumbi (a traditional North-Indian instrument) dominating the composition, with Dadlani's rap verses that pack a punch. The lyrics by Varun Grover mirror a drug user's state of a mind in a more mordant manner. We love the crazy vibes of Ud-daa Punjab, and so will you.
Mallya is back as a solo vocalist in the melodious and well composed Hass nach le. Fans of Shahid Kapoor might get transported to a song titled "Ik tu hi" (remember the Hans Raj Hans version in Mausam?) with this one, especially in the first 1:30 mins of the track. At least, we did! Mallya effortlessly sings this one, especially the high notes. The dholki and harmonium artists do an excellent job. Perhaps the only number with a touch of romance, this one might just make it to your next Sangeet choreography list.
Finally, we come to the highlight of this album. If Chitta Ve gives you a high, Trivedi's Vadiyaan is all set to take you higher. Sounds straight off an EDM concert, this one. Everything about Vadiyaan is trippy and absolutely incredible, right from Trivedi's fine vocals to the composition and of course, Shellee's fabulous lyrics that explain a drug user's point of view perfectly. Vadiyaan is crazily trippy and we bet you can't stop hearing this one on repeat. Definitely my favourite from the Udta Punjab album!
Verdict: Insanely trippy and highly addictive! I gotta give it - ✮✮✮✮1/2

13 Years of Shahid Kapoor | 5 Favorite Performances
OMG! Look who has completed 13 years in the industry. It was this day, back in 2003, that we saw Shahid Kapoor make a dhamakedaar debut in Ishq Vishk. Since then, the actor has never looked back. For someone who entered the Indian Film Industry at an early age, Shahid has experimented with a variety of different genres, worked with some of the finest directors, production houses and the best female actors. Apart from films, the actor has time and again proved his incredible dancing and hosting skills at various award functions.
The result? Millions of fans (8.3M on Twitter alone, to be precise) across the globe and multiple fan-bases worldwide, where members keep increasing at the speed of lightening. And those moves! Gosh, how can anyone not love the way he dances? So, picking a few favourites from 24 unique films is no mean feat, especially if you are someone who has seen all of them on repeat. But still, we present to you our favorite Shahid Kapoor performances.
Haider
Let's start off with the film that enjoyed a successful award spell last year! Shahid's impeccable performance as Haider Meer in this film made sure that leaves the theatre min blown, including me. Hamlet aka Haider was a challenge that Shahid accepted with great confidence and his dedication was hard to miss. He got into the skin of his character with great ease, connected with the audience through an array of emotions, gave the film his all and ultimately, proved that his acting prowess is unmatched. Critics, take that!
Jab We Met
We all love Jab We Met, don't we? And we can't help but fall in love with Shahid Kapoor memorable portrayal of the adorable Aditya Kashyap. Like imagine, The Aditya Kashyap, the guy who falls head over heels in love with the jhalli Geet, and goes all the way till Shimla and Manali looking for her. Shahid breathed life into Aditya (India's answer to Mr.Darcy) with his calm and natural performance. The way Shahid essayed Aditya's character with perfect style and charisma is a good example of how even the most simplest of characters can stay with you for good.
Kaminey

Usne F ko F bola, and that was enough for the entire nation to stand up and take notice of him. It was amazing to see Shahid's successful transition from a lover struck boy in Kismat Konnection to playing complex characters in the following year. He took things a notch above by shedding his boy next door for a more rugged, tapori avatar in Vishal Bhardwaj's Kaminey. It made for a visual treat, the kind of cinema that you wouldn't mind watching back-to-back in a cinema hall. The film presented a never before seen side of the actor. In this sinister plot, with the perfect mix of violence and dark humour, Shahid played the role of twins with speech defects and boy, he sure did a fantastic job!
Vivah
The film did great business at the box office, and it further established Shahid as not just the fun-loving college going boy, but also someone who can play the part of a mature, supportive lover with ease. This film was a high point in Shahid's third year as an actor, as the film earned him a lot of accolades and acclaim. Plus, he played the epitome of love in Sooraj Barjatya films - Prem, quite convincingly. With the perfect blend of emotions, subtle charm and that adorable look, we surely enjoyed watching Shahid in Vivah.
R... Rajkumar
Shahid teaming up with Prabhu Dheva was enough to get us jumping with joy. While most critics may differ with our opinion (I don't know why), R... Rajkumar was one of Shahid's exceptional performances. He was everything that a massy hero of a masala film would require. Action, drama, dance aur emotion; you name it and Shahid nailed them all. The actor confessed that it was quite a task to step into the shoes of a masala action hero, especially with all those moves that Prabhu sir made him do, but we couldn't have had it any other way. Nobody can do a Gandi Baat or Saree ke fall sa like Shahid can. Also, Silent ho ja, varna main violent ho jaunga is one cool dialogue.
Ahem!
So, while I am done with that tough task of putting together a top 5 list (in random order), I would like to add one more film. Although it went largely unnoticed (unfortunately), I really thought Shahid's performance as the ambitious Karan in Badmaash Company made quite an impact.
We can't wait to watch Shahid create magic with two completely different characters - that of a rockstar and a war soldier in his upcoming films, Udta Punjab and Rangoon. We have been trippin' on Chitta Ve already. What about you?

Relationship is all about making time for each other | Kareena Kapoor Khan - Exclusive Interview
I was around 8 years old when one of Dharma's most ambitious projects - Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, hit the screens. While the family drama kept me entertained, one girl left a strong impression with her amazing personality and care-free attitude. I was mesmerised by the fact that someone could pull off a character like Poo so flawlessly, without making it look too caricaturish. Other characters namely Kaurwaki, Sanjana, Chameli followed and needless to say, the actress went on to become one of my favourites. Not because of her beauty, nor the glamorous avatar (she wins brownie points for it anyway), but the sheer magic that she created, every time she appeared on screen.
There is something very charming about Kareena Kapoor Khan, who then went on to win many more hearts with her impeccable act as Geet in Jab We Met. Her sixteen year long journey in Bollywood has been a courageous one. The actress experimented with her roles, and created a benchmark that younger actresses could follow. Be it going size zero, taking up cameos in the form of dance numbers for fun or turning singer in Dev, she always took the unconventional route and preferred to follow her heart, instead of accepting trends that were often followed by her peers. Last week, I met the Begum for a chat at her office, just before her dinner time (she is very particular about food timings). She is one of the few people who can make even the most simple pair of jeans look glamorous. For someone who likes a heart-to-heart conversation over a WhatsApp message, Kareena still prefers to be old school and honestly, we love her for that! In a freewheeling chat, the actress discusses films, relationships and Ki & Ka, which hits the screens tomorrow.
What was the first thing that attracted you to the script of Ki & Ka?
The concept! The very fact that Balki decided to work on a concept like this and wanted to present a unique love story. He didn't want to go the typical boy meets girl route. Here, you have a boy who wants to be like his mother, which is very rare. Normally, most guys would say that they want to be like their father. Kabir (Arjun's character) is different. So you see, the script started on an amazing note and I just couldn't say no! You have to see the movie to believe it.
How much of Kareena do you see in Kia, your character?
Um! I do relate to it, since she is married, independent and hard working. She is very much a modern girl, who has grown up with ambitions and believes in chasing her dreams.
And what about Saif? Is he anything like Arjun's character, Kabir?
Not at all! He started working at the age of 17. He can never think of not working.
The trailer of Ki & Ka, especially the intimate moments, gave rise to unnecessary controversies. How did you react to it?
We live in India. According to some people, everything in life is terminated once you are married. It's like you gotta change the way you breathe as well, as if you have sold your soul. But, that's not the case, right? I am an actor and my husband respects me for that. We are in 2016 and the concepts of our films are changing with time. If the two characters in a film are husband and wife, they have to be intimate with each other. There is no other way! I discussed the script and the requirements with my husband before signing the film. He was absolutely fine and said that if it is the requirement, you must go ahead and do it. In fact, he added that I have stood for a lot of things that go against the norm, which includes working after marriage. So, he has always wanted me to be the modern woman that I claim to be. People must not forget that I am an actor as well.

For me, a relationship between two individuals is built over love, support and respect for each other. Ki & Ka shows how the woman accepts her man, despite knowing that he has no ambitions. Love knows no boundaries or calculations. Separations and break-ups happen in a very personal space. Nobody knows what actually happens behind the closed doors. That's how I look at it.
In the case of celebrities, do you think it is stardom that often takes a toll?
Not really. In my case, both Saif and I are actors. Both of us are busy with our respective projects. When I was shooting for Udta Punjab and Ki & Ka, he was not. Now that he has begun working on Rangoon, I am caught up with promotions. So, we often miss each other. But, relationship is all about making time for one another. You can't just make a statement and yell out - I don't have time for love! Women are multi-taskers and if one really wants to, you can always remove some time. Personally, I always try and make an effort to take sometime out to go see him. Sometimes, we both take some time off for a getaway. You have to work on things in a way that you get that little extra time for your loved ones.
Do you also think the fast paced lifestyle today has played a role in this?
More than that, I feel people are getting used to depending on all things digital. You get one million likes and folks go, Oh! I am so loved. I read stories where normal conversations, that could happen face to face, are taking place on Twitter. People are taking to Facebook to wish their loved ones on birthdays and anniversaries! How difficult is it to pick up the phone and wish someone?
So, it seems like you are unlikely to break your promise (that of never creating a social media account).
Obviously! I will never be on any social media platform. Why can't I just meet someone or talk to them over the phone? Or if I like someone in a film, I'll call them up or send them a note na. That's so much more personal and special. The only thing I like about Twitter is the fact that it can help spread awareness, especially during a time of crisis. But for conversations and using it as a tool to simply send out messages? Never. I think, I am still a little old school like that.
But, what about fans who look up to you and wish to connect with their favourite actress?
I like to connect with them through interviews, promotions among others. Also, it is not possible to answer millions of fans on social media. You will always end up disappointing someone. But, I am glad I have a strong and active fan club on social media called Kareena Online. They are almost like my army and are very possessive about me. I feel proud to be on Twitter and Instagram through them. With fans as protective as them, I know I am safe on social media. They will bajao anyone who writes anything against me (laughs). They will troll them.
You are now working with co-actors from the new lot. What do you have to say about their skills and the experience of working with them?
As far as Arjun is concerned, he is as experienced as any other senior actor in the industry. Perhaps, that is also because he is an industry kid and has grown up watching films. But, I feel all the young boys have great energy and acting skills, which is almost like a seasoned star. They are very conscious about everything that they do. They are all guns blazing, raring to go!

What was Saif's first reaction when he heard about the concept of this film?
He thought it was very cool. The very fact that Balki came up with a concept like this fascinated him. It's not a commercial blockbuster kind of a formula, with item songs and a huge ensemble cast. But, it has a concept from the heart, which will stand for something and be a nice film. So, that's why he encouraged me to do the film.
There is a lot of curiosity building up around your character in Udta Punjab. What is it all about?
It's a drug drama and I play a doctor. Udta Punjab stresses upon an important reality of Punjab - the drug busts that have been taking place. The film is more intense, gritty and dark, which is completely different from Ki & Ka. The latter is also real, but so much more quirky and fun. Udta Punjab is very dark and I am sure people will like the look once it is released.
Since you were shooting for the two films simultaneously, was it difficult to shift from a dark world to a quirky one the very next day?
In fact, I shot for three films from completely different genres - Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Udta Punjab and Ki & Ka, all back to back. As an actor, you have to give your best in each character and work it out as much as possible. For someone who loves cinema and acting, I absolutely enjoyed the experience!
